Bring video stories of coastal science to the world. The Hakai Institute conducts leading-edge, long-term scientific research on the coastal margin of British Columbia. Our set of interlocking programs blend technology and science to better understand the coastal margin of BC and beyond. We eschew artificial boundaries both scientific and geographic, as our interdisciplinary teams work from ice fields to watersheds to the nearshore and coastal oceans. We link with regional and global networks. We integrate the disciplines. We fill the seams of coastal science. Our media team shares the stories of Hakai science in many ways, but with a particular focus on video. We are looking for a passionate, young videographer to come learn from our award-winning video team and help us tell stories of coastal science. Duties The intern will be an integral part of our video team, participating in discussing, brainstorming, and planning shoots and edits. Specific duties will include, but aren’t limited to, working as a field assistant to our videographer, shooting, recording audio, helping with media management, and working on short video edits for online distribution. Though some of the work will be done in an office setting (based out of Victoria), shoots will take place outdoors in remote locations of coastal BC. Intern should expect to work in all weather conditions, sometimes traveling over difficult terrain, while carrying significant weight (camera and audio gear, etc.); some work might occur on boats. Skills/Qualifications The intern should be in, or recently graduated from, some program that teaches video skills, particularly both shooting and editing. Should have some experience and familiarity with video equipment (eg, DSLRs, GoPros, drones) and audio recording equipment. Some experience and familiarity with shooting and editing video for online distribution. Experience in the outdoors and being on the water is an asset. Experience or demonstrated interest in coastal environments, science, and science communications is an asset. Should be a good communicator and listener. You should be open to guidance and instruction and be able to work well as part of a team, but also at times, independently. We value creativity and a good sense of humour. Details You will be based in our waterfront office in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia. Travel will be required for video shoots which may take place on Quadra Island, Calvert Island, or anywhere on the BC coast. Pay is $3,250 per month. The term is four months, ideally May to August, though exact dates can be negotiated. To Apply Please submit cover letter, resumé, and links to relevant samples of your work. While we appreciate your interest, only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted. Closing date is February 24, 2020.
