About the Unit There are more than 500 million smallholder farms globally. 2.5 billion people depend on Smallholder Communities for their food and livelihoods. Smallholder regions are characterized by low living standards, high rates of illiteracy and low agricultural productivity. Yara's mission is "Responsibly Feed the World and Protect the Planet". Key to achieving this is enabling thriving Smallholder Communities. In 2017, Yara created a new digital development unit to build solutions for smallholder farming communities. Our team is made up of designers, software engineers, data scientists, services and solution managers and product owners. Digital Farming is a strategic priority within Yara. Each year we significantly grow our global Digital Farming team and country coverage. With hubs in Europe, Latin America, Asia and North America, Yara Digital Farming is shaping the future of farming by building new digital solutions solving critical problems within agriculture. Responsibilities Lead a broad range of data-driven projects, from machine learning to experiment design and analysis Contribute to agile development of advanced analytics projects, from rapid prototyping to full scale deployment Propose multiple solutions and make informed decision on when to apply simple vs complex solutions for the target problem Work with stakeholders to identify opportunities where data and data science can be leveraged Use scientific rigour to both create and challenge hypotheses and data in a collaborative environment Aid in business strategy by documenting assumptions, hypothesis and related risks with respect to data products Some examples of projects you might tackle in this role: Developing machine learning software for ultra low-cost nitrogen sensing devices Developing ML prediction engines to curate content for farmers Transforming crop models into production models Developing frameworks to assess accuracy of novel hardware solutions Predicting crop yield from third party data Profile Bachelor's degree or higher in quantitative and empirical field (physics, chemistry, bioscience, economics, statistics, etc) At least 2 years experience in data science or statistics and a track-record of delivering data products in a commercial environment Proficient in Python and with our stack: SQL, Jupyter, Sklearn, SciPy, Statsmodels Comfortable with statistics (e.g. experiment design and analysis, isolating sources of noise, guiding data collection) Working knowledge of machine learning applications (e.g. ensemble methods, penalised regression, boosting etc) Bonus points for any from: R, AWS, Docker and Tensorflow!
