National Trust of Australia Queensland (NTAQ) is a membership-based community organisation and registered charity that works to protect, conserve and celebrate the Environmental, Built and Cultural heritage of our State, affiliated with the Australian and international National Trusts. The NTAQ collection includes Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, and the renowned Currumbin Wildlife Hospital. The Currumbin Wildlife Hospital Team is currently seeking a qualified Veterinarian for a 12-month internship. The Hospital prides itself on providing the highest level of care possible to our patients. Experienced Vets and Nurses assess and treat all of the cases. Many patients require surgery and long periods of rehabilitation before release. The Hospital is a well-equipped purpose built facility providing veterinary treatment to over 12,000 wild native patients and the over 850 captive animals at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. The successful candidate will work alongside experienced wildlife veterinarians while working on their own caseload. Position details & duties Responsible for providing wildlife veterinary care, including all clinical and surgical duties as level of experience allows. Undertake laboratory diagnostic procedures, including sample collection and storage. Assist during examinations and clinical/surgical procedures. Calculate, prepare and administer medications, including anaesthetics. Demonstrate and undertake safe capture and restraint techniques of both native and exotic species. Undertake associated administrative duties including recording and maintaining clinical treatment files, laboratory diagnostic test results. Assist and participate in research projects as required. This is a full-time position work 38 hours per week. Regular working days are expected to be Friday through to Tuesday, working all weekends. This internship will run from May 2020 – April 2021. Pay rate and conditions are under the Veterinary Award 2010, with the pay grade of Level 1A. The successful applicant may be required to provide a satisfactory police check clearance. Non-smokers preferred. Selection Criteria: Please note that only applicants who meet all selection criteria will be considered for interview. Must hold minimum qualification of BVSc, registered in Queensland. Understanding and knowledge of local wildlife species is preferred. Can demonstrate a highly flexible, cooperative and positive attitude. Has high level of time management and organisational skills. Has a professional approach to duties and standard of personal presentation. Have very capable computer skills. Holds a current driver’s licence. Can liaise and communicate in a friendly and effective manner with all key internal department staff including volunteers and external local community groups and associated veterinary contacts. Knowledge and understanding of the key elements of Currumbin Sanctuary Wildlife Hospital is highly desirable.
