Westcountry Rivers Trust Junior Land Team Officer This is a Grade 1 role with a salary between £17,000 – £17,800 (dependent on experience) plus benefits including 8% pension. This is a 12 month fixed term contract (with the potential to extend) and is a full time role of 37.5 hours per week. The Westcountry Rivers Trust is an environmental charity that works across the South West to improve our rivers for the benefit of all. We work with EU grants, water company funded initiatives, commercial contracts and government funding to deliver change both in our rivers and on the land that they drain. The Land Team at the Westcountry Rivers Trust is comprised of Farm Advisors with extensive fieldwork experience and professional Agronomy qualifications. Developing and delivering practical initiatives across the region, the Team work closely with farmers, landowners and the agricultural industry to identify opportunities for improvements which deliver multiple benefits to the farm business and the environment. As the Trust and our projects continue to grow, we are seeking a junior to join the team who will learn best practice and theory to support land and water management, with a strong focus on soil science. The work will entail significant fieldwork but also an exciting opportunity to learn from working alongside others in the Land Team and at the Trust. This role is linked to a specific project and is for a fixed term of one year, there could be potential to extend this post subject to other funding thereafter. The role will benefit from significant training and mentoring to support learning. Job Description: This Junior Land Team Officer role will report to Hazel Kendall, Head of Land Team and CPES Project Manager. This role will assist in the organisation of project activities and project delivery and will include the following responsibilities: Undertake fieldwork and soil sampling (initially under direction and following training). Manage a programme of sampling, data records, despatch and results. Undertake structured, recognised training to support learning. Manage your own workload and priorities to meet targets (with guidance). Shadow Farm Advisors to gain broad Land Management experience and to develop own skills with mentored support. Undertake desk-based studies e.g. evaluation & data analysis (with training) and communications content, to contribute to and draft progress or funder reports, ultimately to develop skills in drafting Farm Plans or other reporting needs.,. Attend relevant events, workshop and meetings. Work collaboratively with project partners and/or clients. Manage files and data in line with Trust policies. Complete all other administrative tasks required by the Trust including meeting H&S requirements, time sheeting and expenses, attendance of training, CPD and team away days, attendance at project meetings etc. As a Junior Land Officer, you will be expected to agree work activities and priorities with an appropriate senior member of staff, e.g. your line or project manager, and keep them informed of any changes as they arise. You are also expected to submit all work to a senior member of the team for review / QA before publishing or submitting to funders or clients. Person Specification Knowledge and Experience Good basic and practical knowledge of Agriculture and Farming systems. Developing knowledge and experience in the use of Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Some experience of report writing and data evaluation. Some existing knowledge of soil science (Desirable). Skills and Competencies Positive attitude and willingness to follow instructions. Practical approach to fieldwork and physical working days. Experience of working and learning as part of a team with a positive and proactive approach to inter-team working. Good verbal communication skills to engage with a broad range of audiences such as farmers and farmer groups, NGOs, Agri Industry, Defra family, project funders, academia etc. Good written skills including accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to use field survey equipment, tools and to follow detailed sampling protocols. Honest, transparent and trustworthy approach to work. Applies rigorous scientific principles. Ability to manage time, conflicting priorities and meet deadlines. Recognising own strengths and weaknesses and being proactive to build on skills and knowledge where required. Qualifications Student/Graduate to HE level or above in Environmental Science, Agriculture, Geography or a related subject. This role will require regular fieldwork such as soil sampling and therefore the role holder must be able to undertake this work. It will also require the ability to travel to often remote sites mostly in Devon and Cornwall. The successful applicant will need to provide proof of the right to work in the UK.
