As the multi-specialty group practice for the faculty of the University of Minnesota Medical School, University of Minnesota Physicians has more than 950 physicians and 1,600 health professionals, providing clinical care in over 100 specialty and sub-specialty areas. The Insurance Specialist is responsible for verifying health insurance, obtaining benefits and meeting payer requirements to secure prior authorization(s). Verifies insurance coverage, resolves any issues with authorization and escalates complicated issues to the appropriate manager. Acts as a liaison between patients, their health insurance, care providers and financial counselors, to assist in understanding their healthcare financial responsibilities. Works to establish timely, correct insurance prior to the patient obtaining their medication, in order to financially secure the prior authorization, promote good customer service, efficient and accurate billing and prompt reimbursement. Assists with appealing denials from payers by submitting medical records and other supporting documentation as needed to secure authorization or retro authorization. Other job responsibilities include: Ensures insurance patient’s coverage, resolves any issues with authorization and escalates complicated issues to the appropriate manager. Works to establish timely, correct insurance prior to the patient’s procedure in order to financially secure the prior authorization, promote good customer service, efficient and accurate billing and prompt reimbursement. Demonstrates ability to adjust service approaches to reflect developmental level of population served. Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED. Two years in insurance resolution, patient accounting or medical billing with knowledge of medical terminology, financial securing, collections and patient interaction; or new graduate from an HIM-related program with equivalent knowledge. Knowledge of health plans and payer information including the prior authorization process. Good Microsoft Excel and Work skills. Solid understanding of medical terminology. Good organizational skills. Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to interact with patients, physicians, multiple internal/external departmental personnel, financial services and insurance payers. Knowledge of medical financing. Critical thinking skills. Ability to work effectively with cultural differences.
