* A three year PhD position funded by Lille University and supported by the Institut Universitaire de France (IUF) is available starting from September 2020 at Lille University (UMET laboratory). The candidate will be hosted in Lille University, and more particularly in the laboratory UMET (Unité Matériaux et Transformations, UMR CNRS 8207). Three teams of UMET will collaborate on that subject: team ISP (Ingénierie des Systèmes Polymères), team MPGM (Métallurgie physique et génie des matériaux) and team PIHM (Processus aux Interfaces et Hygiène des Matériaux), which is also an INRAE (Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique et de l’Environnement) unit. The laboratory UMET is a laboratory dedicated to Material sciences for a large range of applications. It hosts a large portion of the research in Materials Science of Lille University. See http://umet.univ-lille1.fr/presentation.php?lang=en for more details. * Fouling is generally defined as the unwanted formation of thermally insulating materials or deposits from process fluids onto stainless steel made heat transfer surfaces. Fouling in food-processing industries leads to the functional decline of thermal and hydrodynamic equipment performances, decreased product quality and lack of sterility as well as decrease of the surface hygiene. These two last points particularly induce a severe sanitary risk by favoring the development of pathogenic agents. A number of international research teams are working on the development of antifouling surface treatments, but no viable solutions have been found yet to durably reduce the fouling and cleaning frequencies in the dairy industry. UMET has been working these last years on different surface treatment processes (amphiphilic coatings, self-stratifying coatings, plasma treatments, etc.), that provide some interesting results, but the conclusion drawn from these studies is that the surface contact area of the steel must be first drastically inscreased to get sustainable antifouling properties. To reach this goal, the objective is to design micro/nano-architectured surfaces by (1) Fabricating architectured steel of controlled porosity using lost-wax 3D printing and casting process, and (2) Coating these micro-structures with a range of hybrid atmospheric plasma jet assisted deposits. The designed surfaces will then be characterized using extreme-surface characterization tools and tested toward dairy and egg fouling in a pilot-scale heat exchanger. Highly motivated candidates with an academic degree at the Masters level in materials science, chemistry and/or chemical engineering are invited to apply for this position. Candidates should have a real interest for experimental science and be able to rationalize resulting data through a simple modeling approach. The knowledge of English is mandatory. Spoken and written French is an asset. Previous experience in surface modification (such as plasma treatments) or design (additive manufacturing) will be considered strong assets. * In order to apply send by e-mail a CV, Covering Letter and Reference Letter to Prof. Maude JIMENEZ Other researchers involved in the PhD supervision: Prof. David Balloy, Dr. Guillaume Delaplace and Dr. Cosmin Gruescu Durée du contrat: 36 mois Type d'emploi: Temps plein, CDD Expérience: doctorant h/f ou similaire: 1 an (Souhaité)
