Position Overview This position is a leader in unique involvement opportunities that support United Way’s individual engagement goals. This position will be responsible for supporting and implementing strategies that mobilize people to give, advocate, volunteer and engage; providing support for raising alternate revenue through individual donors; introducing individuals to the United Way brand and implementing strategies to effect positive public policy/advocacy change. This position is part of a team that recognizes the critical role volunteers and individuals play in furthering the United Way mission; and their interests and sensibilities are paramount in the design and delivery of our programs. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Execute strategies for engagement of people (both in and out of the workplace) through opportunities to support United Way’s community goals. Includes designing, implementing and evaluating innovative community and corporate engagement services and experiences for year-round strategic engagement, including those related to engagement groups, ad hoc corporate engagement projects, and seasonal events and initiatives. Support comprehensive engagement strategies that align interests of community and corporate partners with United Way’s community priority areas: includes opportunities for ongoing and episodic volunteer, advocacy, and engagement opportunities that contribute to the advancement of United Way’s community goals. Cultivate deeper relationships with current and prospective United Way volunteers, contributors, community partners, funders and constituents; ensures appropriate/relevant follow-up including acknowledgement for engagement. Deliver on innovative engagement strategies appropriate to United Way engagement groups, leadership donors, and members of organized labor, regional advisory boards, and other groups of constituents. Support the assessment of volunteers’ knowledge about United Way and its role in changing community conditions, trust in United Way, and giving behavior as a result of engagement; and continuous improvement based on results. Facilitate strategies related to community conversations including reaching diverse constituents, timely and appropriate follow-up with participants, execution of on-going follow-up, theming, and sharing information with internal/external audiences. Align with and/or implement United Way Worldwide strategies for community engagement, as appropriate, including participation in national calls-to-action and other endeavors. Actively participate at community events and meetings to increase United Way’s presence through networking, prospecting and relationship building. Engagement Groups In conjunction with supervisor and volunteers, develop, execute and support the strategic plan and goals of each engagement group, in alignment with United Way, and provide thought leadership to move the work forward. Build strong relationships with members of each engagement group and execute on a recognition plan for donors and volunteers. Recruit and engage new members for each engagement group. Actively seek out best practices and continuously bring new and impactful ideas to each group’s leadership volunteers. Develop and implement a work plan that supports and achieves identified membership goals. Provide constant communication with lead volunteers to ensure full knowledge of community needs and direction of United Way. Serve as a liaison for each engagement group to United Way departments including, but not limited to, Communications & Marketing, Resource Development, Community Impact, and Engagement. Plan and execute events in conjunction with volunteers and United Way’s Communications & Marketing department. Schedule volunteer meetings, ensure minutes are recorded, and track attendance at meetings. Develop a structure that engages volunteers to assist with all of the above duties. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in human services, social impact design, development, marketing, community engagement, public policy or related field required. Preferably 2 to 4 years of experience in volunteer management, nonprofit sector, social impact design, corporate community relations, project management, community organizing or other related areas required. Technology skills including expertise with Microsoft Office and database management; willingness to learn new applications and identify innovative ways for technology to support organizational objectives. Project management skills: ability to multitask, problem-solve, prioritize, delegate, and to create systems and processes. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and juggle multiple priorities, and able to react and adjust quickly to changing conditions. Excellent communication skills; able to communicate effectively and articulately in writing and orally. Strong customer focus in all tasks and activities, even while at times under pressure. Solid relationship management skills enhancing internal organizational relations and external community interactions. Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk and/or hear. The employee is frequently required to use finger and hand motion and occasionally to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally carry, lift, setup and/or move up to 40 pounds. There may be additional physical requirements associated with volunteer event. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
