Trainee Dosimetrist Practitioner Do you have an interest inscienceand think you would like to working in radiotherapy ? We are looking for an aspiring person to join the dosimetry team as a trainee and work on range of things from creating radiation treatment plans to measuring radiation doses all using high tech equipment. During the training you will complete a degree at Cumbria University as part of a level 6 apprenticeship resulting in a B.Sc. (Hons) in Healthcare Science (degree appenticeship). The practical work will be completed at Lincoln County Hospital with attendance at Cumbria for only a few weeks per year. The training is for a three year period starting September 2020 to August 2023. It is expected that there will be an opportunity to apply for a permanent post at the end of this period. About the Department Radiotherapy Physics is one of the Healthcare Science disciplines at Lincoln County Hospital. It provides a therapy service using complex equipment and software for the treatment of cancer. Over the last few years the department has had all new systems and we are looking to enhance the support provided for these systems through the new training schemes developed by the National School of Healthcare Science (NSHCS). Staffing in Radiotherapy is a mix of physicists, dosimetrists, engineers, radiographers, consultant oncologists and clerical staff working as a multidisciplinary team. The equipment includes a 4D CT scanner, three high energy linacs fitted with kilovoltage imaging which can be interlaced with the therapy radiation and an optical system for surface monitoring and motion management during treatments. We provide HDR and LDR brachytherapy which have their own planning systems. Our comprehensive quality assurance covers all the equipment and software and we are looking at working to the level of the new BS70000 standard. The raft of equipment and the nascent links with the local University are providing opportunities for R&D. We are keen to use the capabilities of all the new equipment to the full and in line with the NHS England Vision 2014-24. We are continuing to build the team which will respond to the challenges ahead. What we’re looking for We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is keen to learn, and possesses the qualifications suitable to enroll with Cumbria University Healthcare Science degree apprenticeship course in dosimetry. Interested candidates should be able to demonstrate an aptitude for science, and be able to commence the role from 31stAugust, in order to meet the University course dates.
