Applications are invited for a Research Fellow to join the team working on a major AHRC funded research project investigating the past, present and future of urban commons in England (‘Wastes and Strays’). The Fellow will be based at The School of Architecture at the University of Portsmouth working on one of three work packages, exploring possible futures of the urban common, with an emphasis on community, creative practice, health and ecology. The Fellow will be responsible for the production of a range of creative outputs, including a ‘creative residency’ in either visual or performative arts, as well as the instigation and organisation of innovative participatory events at the 4 project case-study locations across England. The project lead institution is Newcastle University and there will be periodic travel there. Alongside other work packages investigating the historical, archaeological and legal structures of commons adjacent to cities, this work package will cultivate interdisciplinary methods and outputs developing new and multifaceted definitions of the modern urban common and associated notions of ‘the commons’ and commoning. Working with the creative, cultural and professional areas, the Portsmouth School of Architecture is involved in internationally acclaimed pure, applied and practice-led research, research which informs and leads our teaching. The School has been developing various research areas including resilient and sustainable urbanism, spatial and performative practices, re-naturing cities, digital design and new technologies, environmental analysis and design, architectural and urban theory and history, historic environments and heritage, interior design theory and practice, ecologies of bodies/materials/constructions, and design education. Our Project Office, which draws on our research and involves students, develops live projects with local, regional, national and international communities.
