Thurston County is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Accounting Assistant II for the Public Health & Social Services Department. Some of the essential job functions include, but are not limited to the following: Performs accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger adjustment activities for a county department. Prepares A/P, A/R, and general ledger entries and documents to ensure accuracy, propriety, proper account coding, adequate explanations, and other applicable information in accordance with Federal, State, and Local regulations. Trains and consults with other county staff to support proper completion and documentation of purchasing, travel, reimbursements, and payroll. Performs special projects requiring extensive research, interpretation, and/or auditing of statistical data. May assist with the monitors of funds and preparing quarterly and annual reports to show the status of the fund using county formats and/or guidelines including making projections of revenue and expenditures. Assist with the development of the department budget for assigned funds. May perform any of the tasks listed in the lower level Accounting series. Working Conditions: Work is generally performed indoors and in an open office environment where varying sound levels of conversation, office machines, and other distractions may occur. May be required to pick-up and deliver items and operate County automobiles. QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma or GED and one year of college level accounting courses. Two (2) years of general accounting experience. Ability to utilize a personal computer and applicable software to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's license, or the ability to obtain a license within 30 days of employment, or otherwise meet the travel requirements of the position. DESIRED SKILLS: Knowledge of: GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles), State of Washington BARS (Budgeting, Accounting and Reporting System), and Thurston County Financial Policies and Procedures. Financial terminology. Contemporary accounting systems and software tools such as Excel, Word, and Outlook. Skills and Abilities: Planning, organizing and establishing work priorities with minimal supervision. Exercising independent judgment to meet deadlines. Organizing, analyzing, interpreting and evaluating financial data. Establishing and fostering a cooperative and effective working relationship with other employees, organizations, and the public. Communicating effectively via telephone or in person with other agencies as well as employees. Organizing data into appropriate usable format and preparing correspondence and documents from oral and written instructions. Reading and comprehending legal and non-legal documents.
