The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for an assistant objects conservator or an associate objects conservator in the David Booth Conservation Department. The successful candidate will work collaboratively on a wide-range of modern and contemporary works across all curatorial departments and participates in all departmental activities, including examination, documentation, treatment, and research of collection materials, as well as acquisition, exhibition, collection care, loan, and courier responsibilities. Please note, final title assignment will be dependent on credentials of finalist. Responsibilities: Examines, documents, and treats three dimensional objects in the collection. Participates in all departmental activities including acquisition, preparation of works for exhibition, collection care, loans, and research. Monitors collection works in storage, provides advice on environmental conditions, packing and other preventive conservation steps for the collection on an ongoing basis. Works collaboratively across departments at the Museum including Conservation, Curatorial, Exhibition Planning and Design, and Collection Management and Exhibition Registration. Conducts research centering on new protocols, tools, and technologies related to both artists’ practice and materials and documentation strategies conservation methods. Communicates with artists and related stakeholders on in-depth conservation issues. Assists with the maintenance of the Objects Conservation Studio, including researching, maintaining and creating workflows for specialized equipment and tools. Helps to refine departmental procedures as necessary. Participates in the training and supervision of interns and fellows. Accompanies outgoing loans to borrowing institutions to oversee their safe transport and installation. Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above. Requirements: Graduate degree in conservation or equivalent training. A minimum of two years of experience in the conservation of three-dimensional sculptures and objects in a modern and contemporary museum setting or equivalent. Experience in performing the treatment of three-dimensional sculptures and objects, with adherence to the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice of the American Institute for Conservation. Experience in the conservation and documentation of contemporary works. Knowledge and experience in current methods of documentation procedures, including digital photography (U.V., IR and Photomicrography), X-radiography and understanding of the application of analytical instruments including X-ray fluorescence, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry is essential. Strong interpersonal and written communication skills. Ability to work cooperatively on projects and to work independently on treatments. Experience serving as courier, and ability to travel as required. Experience overseeing exhibitions and employing preventive display strategies is strongly preferred. Experience engaging with artists and their studios is desirable. Familiarity with The Museum System, MoMA’s collection management system, is desirable. If hired, the individual must successfully complete a security threat assessment through the Department of Homeland Security.
