The Role This position, based in Bangalore, will be responsible for supporting Tala's rapidly growing business in India. You will serve as the primary lawyer responsible for working with the global Tala Legal team to manage corporate governance and compliance in India, negotiate commercial agreements, handle transactions, and work on special projects and other matters unique to a growing startup. We are seeking a highly motivated, self-starter who enjoys working in a dynamic, fast-paced and collaborative environment. In this challenging position, you will report to our General Counsel and work closely with our country team in our Bangalore office. This work involves a lot of "doing" versus "managing." We need an all-star attorney who is excited to "roll up his or her sleeves" with drafting agreements and policies while also providing strategic advice. Your responsibilities will include: Collaborate with US legal team to manage Tala's regulatory compliance, licensing and registration obligations for existing and future business lines in India Be primarily responsible for legal matters in India Negotiate and review commercial contracts Interact with the Reserve Bank of India and other government regulatory bodies as needed Work with our General Counsel and US legal team on other special projects Work closely with and provide advice to the business teams in the Bangalore office Requirements Tala is seeking a Legal Counsel with FinTech experience and international transactional experience to help us operate and grow in India and work on other legal matters. To succeed in this role, you'll need: A passion for Tala's mission 3 to 5 years of legal experience (preferably with some portion of that experience in finance technology and commercial/licensing transactions) A law degree from a leading university or law school Experience working with financial services regulators (eg. RBI, tax authorities) Experience working in the US or with US clients Strong written and oral communication Strong contract drafting skills Highly organized for management of documents High attention to detail Excellent language capability including the ability to communicate orally and in writing English. Ability to draft legal documents in English required. Preferred Skills & Experience Experience working at a startup The successful candidate must be proactive, enthusiastic and being challenged, and demonstrate sound judgment even in ambiguous situations
