About Södertörns högskola

Södertörn University in south Stockholm is a dynamic institute of higher education with a unique profile and high academic standard. A large proportion of the university staff holds doctorates and there is a strong link between undergraduate education and research. Södertörn University has around 11 000 students and 840 employees. Södertörn University is an equal opportunities employer. Environmental Science is a broad interdisciplinary research subject that examines societal interactions with natural values, processes and resources. Environmental Science covers the study of ecological, climatic and other natural processes that affect ecosystems over space and time, as well as human-induced environmental problems, and environmental policy, governance and sustainability challenges. Knowledge in both natural and social sciences is necessary for the understanding of environmental and, more broadly, sustainability challenges. Research in Environmental Science at Södertörn University focuses on two integrated themes: (1) Sustainability challenges and pathways and (2) Environment. These themes and research in Environmental Science at Södertörn University are described in more detail here For more information about doctoral education and research in Environmental Studies at Södertörn University, please click here The theme’s research is organised in three overlapping and interrelated focus areas: Environmental change, Ecological processes and Human impact and sustainability. The application must be relevant to this research theme, as well as to the study of the Baltic Sea region or the Eastern European area, because the position is affiliated with the Baltic and Eastern European Graduate School, BEEGS. This notification of vacancies includes both admission to third-cycle education, i.e. research level, and employment on a doctoral studentship. The intended outcome for students admitted to third-cycle education is a PhD. The programme covers 240 credits, which is the equivalent of four years of full-time study. A doctoral student’s working hours should primarily be dedicated to their third-cycle studies, but the position may entail other duties within education, research and/or administration, but these may be equivalent to no more than 20% of full-time. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND SELECTION The general entry requirements are: a second-cycle/Master’s level qualification, fulfilment of the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits are awarded at second-cycle/Master’s level, or the acquisition of substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad. The Faculty Board may permit an exemption from the general entry requirements for an individual applicant, if there are special grounds (Ordinance 2010:1064). The specific entry requirements are: A qualified applicant has the equivalent of 90 credits, including a degree project worth at least 15 credits at second-cycle level, in Environmental Science or a related subject that is of central importance to the research area (i.e. studies in other disciplines that focus on environmental and sustainability issues). The applicant must also have successfully completed second-cycle/Master’s studies in Environmental Science or related subjects as defined above, or been awarded the same qualifications outside of Sweden or previously been awarded an equivalent degree. The suggested topic for the doctoral thesis, as described in the research proposal that should be submitted when applying, must be clearly relevant to the study of the Baltic Sea region or the Eastern European area, as well as to the Environment research theme. In exceptional circumstances, the Faculty Board may exempt an applicant from fulfilling the specific entry requirements. The following criteria are considered during selection: autonomy and originality in the formulation of problems, analysis and presentation of previous work. theoretical and methodological stringency in previous work and in the research proposal. research experience or relevant professional activity in Environmental Science or an equivalent subject, as described in the specific entry requirements. good skills in the English language and any other languages that are important for work on the thesis. a multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary background in Environmental Science or an equivalent subject as described in the specific entry requirements. relevance of the research proposal to the study of the Baltic Sea region or the Eastern European area. relevance of the research proposal to the research theme Environment. feasibility of the research proposal in terms of time, resources and practical requirements. communication and cooperation skills. Other considerations: Since the successful completion of a doctoral studentship requires guidance and a suitable research environment, a lack of supervisory capacity pertinent to the suggested research topic may mean that applicants cannot be admitted to the third-cycle programme. To minimize this risk, applicants are advised to link their research proposal to relevant parts of the Environment research theme and, if possible, to existing research interests and research projects in Environmental Science. ADMISSION AND EMPLOYMENT An application for a place on a third-cycle programme is also an application for employment on a doctoral studentship. The employment is for no longer than the equivalent of four years of full-time study. The provisions relating to employment on a doctoral studentship are stated in the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 5, Sections 1-7. Doctoral students will be employed by the School of Natural Sciences, Technology and Environmental Studies at Södertörn University. The first date of employment is 1 September 2020.
