Shelby County Co-op was incorporated on October 8, 1928, with the main office located in Shelbyville, Indiana. Our co-op has operations in Agronomy, Propane, Petroleum, and bulk Petroleum Transportation. Shelby County Co-op is owned and controlled by its stockholders/members, who elect a board of directors which consists of seven active co-op members. Shelby County Co-op has over 850 members and 60 full time employees. The initial purpose of the organization was to assist farmers with purchasing fertilizer and farm supplies. By purchasing products as a group rather than individually, farmers could enjoy a substantial amount of savings. Originally, members of the Co-op were the only people allowed to make purchases. Today, anyone can purchase products from our co-operative. Customers who are involved in agriculture can become a member of our Co-op with approval from our board of directors, and by purchasing one share of voting stock. Our voting members share in the profits of the Co-op each year in proportion to the amount of supplies they purchase from the Co-op. Members receive their portion of the profits as a patronage refund, with part of the refund in cash, and the remainder in equity credits. The patronage refund is distributed after the Co-op’s fiscal year end. Propane – June 1985 was the start of Shelby County Co-op’s propane department. We provide service to residential, commercial, and agricultural customers. We offer propane delivery and services in Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio. Our co-op has joint partnerships with RSE Propane, Union County Propane, and LS Propane. We have over 10,000 customers with total sales exceeding 10 million gallons. Petroleum – Shelby County Co-op started in the petroleum business in the 1930’s. We purchase over 5 million gallons of petroleum products, from CountryMark Cooperative, a petroleum refinery in Mount Vernon, Indiana. The products we carry are: Premium Dieselex-4 Off Road, Premium Dieselex-4 On Road, 87 Plus E10 Gasoline, 89 Plus E10 Gasoline, 90 Plus Non-Ethanol Gasoline, #1 Heater Oil, undyed Kerosene, and a full line of Advantage Lubricants. Crops – In 1928 our crops department consisted of buying and storing grain and feed. Meal could be brought to the co-op to be ground, but not flour. In the late 1950’s was the start of our fertilizer department. Bagged fertilizer and 2 types of chemicals were the only items sold. Today we have 2 different locations and an agronomy department that services Shelby County and its surrounding counties. Our West Branch located in Boggstown, Ray’s Crossing in Shelbyville, and the Agronomy Department which is located at our corporate site in Shelbyville. Our crops department provides farmers with the opportunity to purchase bulk fertilizer, liquid fertilizer, bulk and packaged chemicals, anhydrous, seed, lime, GPS and VRT application, soil sampling and recommendations.
