TITLE: Communications Manager, FoodRescue.ca DATE: March 2020 DEPARTMENT: Marketing & Communications REPORTS TO: Senior Manager of Marketing & Communications STATUS: Contract Full-Time (1-year contract, with possibility of extension) WE ARE: Second Harvest is Canada’s largest food rescue organization and expert in perishable food recovery. We rescue surplus, unsold food from across the supply chain and redistribute it to not-for-profits across the country to feed communities. In 2018, Second Harvest launched its innovative online platform, FoodRescue.ca, which enables businesses to donate surplus food to not-for-profit agencies. It is an easy-to-use, free platform that helps users track and manage food donations, while ensuring edible surplus is diverted from landfill. FoodRescue.ca is operating in Ontario and British Columbia and is poised to become the one-stop-shop for food recovery across Canada as we gear up for full national expansion. Second Harvest is looking for a creative, collaborative, and strategic candidate to join our team for a one-year contract as the Communications Manager, FoodRescue.ca. Reporting to the Senior Manager of Marketing & Communications and working alongside the FoodRescue.ca team, this new position will establish and implement a sound marketing and communications strategy for FoodRescue.ca as we build towards national expansion. We are looking for a team player who is comfortable wearing many hats: a doer, a maker, and a problem solver who can develop and lead strategically. YOU WILL: Develop and implement an effective national communications and marketing strategy that generates excitement and drives engagement of the FoodRescue.ca platform, targeting specific demographics to increase user registration, as defined and measured by the FoodRescue.ca team; Develop, execute, and project manage all collateral and resource materials produced to support the FoodRescue.ca team nationally, including but not limited to events, promotional videos, digital content, partner publications, educational toolkits, etc.; Define the best approach to generate coverage for FoodRescue.ca and maximize its media exposure, leveraging existing communication channels, events, earned media, etc.; Build and maintain relationships with press and journalists across the country to position and promote the FoodRescue.ca platform and grow Second Harvest’s existing media lists; Procure and manage key vendor relationships to execute PR and marketing goals, overseeing day-to-day communication and activities, reporting, status meetings, and asset management; Working with the Senior Manager of Marketing & Communications, perform crisis management and other reactive PR situations with grace; know when and how to respond to media inquiries, and to identify and escalate potential public issues that may impact Second Harvest and its FoodRescue.ca platform; Work alongside Second Harvest Communications team to strengthen national brand positioning of FoodRescue.ca while maintaining brand integrity across all marketing initiatives; Oversee annual communications budget for FoodRescue.ca; Lead the digital marketing strategy for the FoodRescue.ca platform, managing ongoing social media and drip marketing campaigns; maintain and update the FoodRescue.ca website on an ongoing basis in conjunction with Second Harvest’s overall digital marketing strategy; Collect and manage impact testimonials of the program that can be leveraged by various internal departments and external outlets to drive awareness and growth; Support the Second Harvest Development team to secure new funding that will ensure long-term sustainability of the platform through effective communication; Perform other related duties as required or assigned to support the overall goals of the organization. YOU ARE: Strategic: you recognize and resolve situations that are ambiguous or challenging, and focus efforts on meeting or exceeding goals; Creative Thinker: you love a good brainstorm and are not afraid to try new things and think outside of the box to engage new audiences and drive brand awareness; Charismatic: you naturally draw people in and aren’t shy in front of a camera; Naturally Curious: you’re innovative, extremely creative, and constantly looking for ways to improve upon things; Entrepreneurial: you have the initiative and drive to get the job done, and can find or build the resources needed for any task; Competent using: o Adobe InDesign o Adobe Photoshop o Adobe Illustrator Experience in the non-profit sector, ideally with 3-5 years work experience; Able to travel across Canada and have a valid Class G driver’s license (mileage compensated); A degree or diploma in journalism/communications is an asset; *Bilingualism is a major asset.
