Position Description The Supervisor for Performing Arts manages the curriculum, instruction, professional development and support, and policy associated with SFUSD’s Arts Equity commitment to all students. They are responsible for disrupting the inequitable trends to access and achievement in arts education and for implementing the district’s policy to guarantee creative, rigorous, and relevant Dance, Music, and Theater Arts instruction to all students, across all district schools. The position is designed to provide a diverse array of services and activities guided by the SFUSD Mission and Goals that: (1) direct the development and implementation of district-wide PK-12 curriculum, (2) support teachers and leaders to determine how Dance, Music, and Theater can be implemented in a manner that reinforces SFUSD’s commitment to equity, and (3) orchestrate a range of professional learning activities for teachers of the two disciplines. The Supervisor for Performing Arts is part of the Visual and Performing Arts Department of the Division of Curriculum & Instruction, under supervision of the Director of Visual and Performing Arts. The Supervisor of Performing Arts will: Provide leadership for continuous improvement of the district’s Dance, Music, and Theater Arts programs and services to support the district goals of access, equity, and excellence for all students, in support of Vision 2025 and the Graduate Profile; Develop and continuously improve a coherent PK-12 curriculum for all three disciplines; Work with site and central leaders to implement the Dance, Music, and Theater Arts curriculum and board policy, to increase the quantity and quality of arts education experienced by SFUSD students, and to develop a shared vision for effective teaching of both disciplines; Coordinate with Dance, Music, and Theater Arts teachers across all elementary, middle, and high schools to ensure alignment of rigorous, standards-based, sequential learning in support of the district’s Graduate Profile; Direct and support discipline specific professional development for Dance, Music, and Theater Arts educators; Recruit, hire, develop, support, and supervise a Teacher on Special Assignment (TSA); Collect and analyze data to track student participation and achievement in both disciplines; Coordinate and help define the work of outside partners to ensure that all work aligns with the department vision and its goals for coherence; Support Dance, Music, and Theater Arts instruction so that success cannot be predicted by race, gender, socio- economic status, and other demographic factors; and Perform related duties as assigned.. Minimum Qualifications Valid Administrative Services Credential 1+ years of school or district-related administrator experience; 2+ years of VAPA or related experience Desired Qualifications Experience with credentialed teacher supervision and evaluation; Strong content knowledge of Dance, Music, and Theater Arts and the ability to apply it to teaching and learning across grades PK-12; Strong pedagogical knowledge of effective teaching practices in Dance, Music, and Theater Arts education; Solid understanding of the expectations of the California K-12 Arts Standards; and Experience in educational issues as they relate to PK-12 Dance, Music, and Theater education Experience with planning, organizing, and directing PK-12 Dance, Music, and Theater Arts education programs; Experience with developing and implementing curriculum for Dance, Music, and Theater Arts education; Knowledge of and successful experience with the design and implementation of professional development for administrators and teachers; Knowledge of how to evaluate departmental programs; Ability to use student, school, and community data to assess professional learning needs; Comfort with fiscal and budgetary administration; Strong knowledge and experience with Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Calendar, Google Slides, and any other web-based platforms required to use by the district; Ability to interpret, analyze, apply, and direct research to curriculum and instruction; Ability to manage relationships with external partners; Knowledge of national and state-wide initiatives in PK-12 Dance, Music, and Theater Arts education; Ability to address access and equity issues with a variety of individuals and groups What We Offer Base salary for a Supervisor begins at $126,632. This position is contracted to work 224 work days. SFUSD offers a competitive salary of commensurate with experience in a similar position.
