About Remarkable Group

A reMarkable technology team reMarkable is a Norwegian technology company developing products to help people think better. Within a short period of time we have grown to over 140 employees and have successfully launched our second generation 'paper tablet' which has been awarded TIMEs “100 Best Innovations of 2020”. For us, Technology is about more than gadgets. The technology team's mission is to solve the impossible tasks, and make the unthinkable possible. We create technology that makes people think better. Our goal is to harness the best from both worlds: the digital and the analogue. In doing so, creating a tool that enhances learning, focus and presence. We make consumer technology without distractions. We work in small cross-functional teams whilst cooperating across teams with a shared vision of the architecture, improving our code continuously. Our team owns the whole stack: from custom hardware/PCBs to the cloud. We use Google Cloud Services to power our backend and on our paper tablet we run our own version of Linux to enable the fluent writing and reading experience. In doing so we’ve hit many milestones such as reducing the latency of writing by half and tripled the battery time between our first and second generation paper tablet. Additionally, we've created the world’s thinnest tablet resulting in the first technology team able to create a fast and paper-like writing experience on a digital paper device. We focus on skills development both individually, within our team and through regular hackathons. Our teams are engaged, curious and dedicated. Our reMarkable technology team house several disciplines, including: Cloud and web Our Cloud and Web teams are responsible for ensuring our website and applications are welcoming, professional and intuitive. Within the nature of technology, the ability to scale is our most important tool when creating advanced functionalities perceived as natural and both flexible and agile for all our customers. Our Cloud team are responsible for our infrastructure's ability to support millions of devices. App We develop our apps on device, desktop and mobile. Our App team has a custom scene graph that enables us to use the e-ink screen effectively while making it easy to write applications for it. We have spent a lot of time making pen strokes look realistic in addition to the hardware supporting a natural writing experience. We use modern C++ (17/20), Qt and Qt Quick with a custom Linux distribution (built with Yocto). We ship the device itself and desktop and mobile applications built with the same code base, allowing faster development cycles and making sure that new functionality is present on all platforms. For embedded graphics we really need a powerful framework that allows us full customization to adapt it to our e-ink display while otherwise being reliable. Embedded Our tablet is not only resembling paper, it feels like paper. Our Embedded team is responsible for our operating systems and the drivers supporting the functionalities and abilities we want our paper tablet to have. It is our responsibility to ensure the strengths of both the analog and the digital are harnessed.
