We invite you to bring your expertise into play as you will be involved in the expansion of a new energy service within Ramboll, Energy Strategy and Planning (ESP). The aim of ESP is to respond to the rapidly evolving decarbonisation agenda. The approach of ESP is to take a whole system view of energy (heat/power/transport) and create integrated and efficient low and zero carbon energy solutions for our clients. Decarbonisation is a key objective for all organisations and strategic plans, supported by delivery options, are required for a successful ‘green transition.’ The ESP service will develop technically viable and cost-effective low and zero carbon strategic energy plans for the production, transmission and distribution of energy to meet the specific needs and circumstances of our clients. In creating technical solutions, a crucial role for ESP will also be to advise on interfaces with the wider policy and regulatory environment. Significant progress has been made in decarbonising the electricity Grid in the UK, mainly using large and utility-scale onshore wind, and more recently solar PV and increasingly offshore wind. This will continue given the huge wind resources available and the lowering costs of these technologies. Far less progress has been made in decarbonising heat, despite it being the largest single source of carbon emissions in the UK. Low cost and widely available, and until recently, mostly domestically produced, natural gas is currently the dominant heating fuel. Alternatives to gas are required for the UK to meet its emissions reduction targets, and ultimately 2050 ‘net zero.’ In many cases this will involve a localised approach to heat generation and supply, taking advantage of the available low carbon energy sources. Heat pumps, large-scale district or communal heating, and building-level, will be used widely. Heat will be generated from air, heat and ground sources, including; industrial surplus (‘waste’) heat, e.g. energy from waste facilities and manufacturing operations, mine waters, geothermal, sewage systems, etc. In transport, like heat, only small gains have been made in reducing carbon emissions. A shift to e-mobility and green gas fuels (biogas, hydrogen) will require very significant investment in transport and the supporting infrastructure (e.g. fuel stores and electric vehicle charging stations). Future low carbon energy systems will be more flexible and responsive, allowing for variability in supply from some renewable sources (e.g. solar and wind), and will incorporate diurnal and inter-seasonal storage to maximise capacity utilisation and efficiency. With increased renewables, and increased participants in the energy system (smaller embedded generators and ‘prosumers’), systems will become fully digitalised. New ‘smart’ energy systems will provide real time information enabling faster decisions, artificial intelligence will be used to learn resource capacities and consumption patterns and provide automatic responses, adjusting generation and demand in response to consumer needs and market signals, and trading platforms for prosumers will develop to manage the complexity and volume of transactions arising from multiple energy market participants. You will join our Energy Strategy and Planning service As our new Low Carbon Policy and Planning Consultant, you will be part of a dynamic and growing team, leading on policy and planning aspects of projects for government, local authorities and other public bodies, and major businesses and industrial organisations. The new ESP service is part of the wider energy systems department in the UK, an established engineering design and consultancy service, comprising 22 engineers and consultants based in five locations; London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Bristol and Aberdeen. In responding to the far-reaching impacts of the climate emergency, the ESP service works across business units, including Buildings, Transport and Environment and Health. We also work with our expert international colleagues, particularly in Denmark, where a planning led approach to local low carbon and integrated energy systems has been developed over decades. Your key tasks and responsibilities will be: Supporting the department in business development activities with a responsibility for supporting bid managers to write bids, developing key customer accounts Leading the bidding and delivery of consultancy projects for public and private sector clients in the areas of policy and strategy research Supporting project managers in delivering energy strategy and planning projects ranging from masterplans, through feasibility to design, including responsibility for advising on policy and planning aspects Participation in projects particularly during the initial master planning and feasibility stages Project managing small policy-led projects, including managing client relationships, project budgets, team resources Support and influence the development of national and local low carbon energy policy via various channels, including working directly with government, local authorities and member organisations, responding to public consultations, attendance and speaking at conferences and events, thought leadership Your starting point for constant growth From the moment you join Ramboll, we will support your personal and professional development so that you grow with the company. For this role, we believe your starting point is: Deep understanding of low carbon energy strategy, policies, regulation and planning at UK national and local levels (heat/power/transport) Experience in producing and/or advising on low carbon energy strategy, policy and planning Experience of working on strategy, policy and planning of low carbon energy projects, particularly master planning and feasibility studies Experience of running consultations with internal and external stakeholders - including colleagues, customers, or members of the public - and capable of providing advice to senior managers, stakeholders and decision makers Appreciation of opportunities and constraints of existing low carbon energy strategies and policies Any degree is acceptable, although deep understanding of low carbon energy strategy and policy is important, which may be gained from further study or experience Membership of a recognised professional institution is desirable Additional Candidate Requirements A good understanding of, and interest in, sustainable development and particularly climate change Track record in management of projects, delivering to quality, budget and programme Ability to deliver oral briefings and presentations Personal qualities that will help you succeed in this role include: Strong communication and interpersonal skills, ideally with experience in business development, project management and client management ‘Can do’ attitude, likes a challenge, and solution-focused Ability to speak fluently and communicate effectively in written reports and oral presentations Welcome to our Energy division Ramboll is at the forefront of addressing the green transition and offers a holistic approach to energy that supports the sector on the journey towards more sustainable solutions.
