Within the Life Sciences Publishing Unit we are looking for a Publisher to manage and develop a portfolio of scientific journals and related products. This Publishing Unit is part of our Science, Technology and Medical Journals (STMJ) Publishing Organization. In total, the STMJ organization consists of approximately 660 fte based in offices in The Netherlands, UK, USA, China and Germany and is responsible for publishing over 1,800 journal titles (24% of the global market). The selected candidate, based in Beijing, China, will be part of a dedicated team of Publishers (located in any of the Elsevier offices in China, Europe and the US) and will report to a Publishing Director in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. About the role: We are looking for a bright, experienced, and enthusiastic individual to maintain, develop, and take publishing responsibility for a list of international journals within the life sciences unit and to work on related projects and initiatives. In addition, the selected publisher will be supporting the team with the expansion and further development of our existing network/market share in China. The role balances knowledge of the academic research environment at large and familiarity with the academic publishing domain, with entrepreneurial skills, a keen interest in new online and Open Access developments, and a strong sense of relationship management. The suitable candidate is a skilled communicator and gets energized by collaboration with others, both internally and externally. Any applicant needs to be prepared to work somewhat independently from the rest of the immediate team while also contributing to the team initiatives as necessary. Key Result Areas Portfolio management and development Develop the strategy for the assigned portfolio; ensure contribution to the department’s and STM Journals organization’s strategies. Work with editors, authors, editorial boards and the academic community at large to ensure your journal portfolio remains current and attractive to authors submitting relevant (high quality) manuscripts. Negotiate and manage contractual relationships with third party journal owners and/or journal editors. Stay up to date with developments in the external market including the development of Open Access initiatives, ensuring your journal portfolio remains fully competitive and the first choice for authors looking to publish their work. Continuous quality control and monitoring of all aspects of day-to-day editorial, production and publishing operations and actively address improvements where required. Meet portfolio related objectives with regards to content growth, articles market share, citation share, relative impact factor, editorial speeds and author and editor satisfaction. Provide input to pricing and budgeting processes when required. Relationship Management and Networking Establish, manage and maintaining strong international networks of key contacts in the field, including editors, authors, society representatives, university leadership and industry, with a view to understanding their professional and organizational needs and ongoing market developments. Establish, manage and maintaining excellent contacts with stakeholders within the company, including editorial, production, publishing, marketing and technology teams, coordinating activities as they relate to the portfolio’s needs and development.
