The Department of Parks and Recreation manages over 80 developed and undeveloped properties that include Regional Parks, Community Parks, Water Parks, Community Pools, Community Centers, Golf Courses, Marinas, amphitheaters and more. The Ranger Division provides safety and security support to all of these facilities and the Park Ranger serves as an ambassador to all visitors and outside entities. The Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking qualified candidates for a PART-TIME benefited Park Ranger I. A Park Ranger I provides visitors, employees and resources protection. As part of the Ranger Division, the Ranger ensures that park visitors are in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. In addition, Park Rangers enforce regulatory codes when visiting parks and school property. This position will be required to work a varied schedule and must remain flexible to work week days, week nights, weekends and holidays as needed. PREFERRED SKILLS Excellent communication, conflict resolution and customer service skills. Previous experience working or volunteering in public parks and recreation, law enforcement or public safety. Bilingual ability in English and Spanish is a plus. Salary: $20.43/hr. Note: The Department of Parks & Recreation conducts criminal background checks on all hires age 18 years and older. Employment is contingent upon acceptable criminal background history. Fingerprinting will be required.. NATURE OF WORK This class is part of the Park Ranger Job Family. Incumbents enforce park rules and regulations. Responsibilities may include: patrolling parks to deter crime and observe for violations of laws, or suspicious activities; responding to dispatches, alarms; Inspecting amenities for security, damage, or safety concerns; investigating and resolving complains; providing information, education, and assistance to patrons; and preparing patrol log and reports. Distinguishing Characteristics This position is responsible for enforcing park rules and regulations, deterring crime and suspicious activity, and providing customer service. 1. Patrols park facilities and enforces applicable laws and public safety regulations, which includes issuing warnings or evictions; calling in back-up; and preparing related violation reports. 2. Interacts with the public, including explaining rules; providing park information and interpretation; and directing traffic congestion. 3. Investigates questionable acts or behavior observed or reported on premises and questions witnesses and suspects to ascertain or verify facts. 4. Ensures overnight safety of the facility by locking and securing all available exits. 5. Prepares and maintains activity logs, reports and assignment-related documentation. 6. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.. KNOWLEDGE Applicable Federal, State, and Local laws, codes, and regulations. SKILLS Providing customer service; Monitoring facilities for hazardous situations; Organizing and maintaining records and files; Interpreting and applying applicable laws, codes, regulations and standards; Utilizing a computer and relevant software applications; Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction. DIRECTION PROVIDED Incumbents may assign/delegate work assignments to temporary employees, and/or regular employees; troubleshoot problems and issues commensurate with relevant experience.. EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS High school diploma or G.E.D.; 1 year of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Valid driver's license. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, inadequate lighting, workspace movement restrictions, intense noises, and travel.
