ABOUT NOTPLA Notpla is a VC-backed, London start-up whose mission is 'to make packaging disappear'. It is leading the way in developing biodegradable packaging materials, made from seaweed and plants, to produce a range of home compostable products and reduce unnecessary plastic in the environment. The Company’s first product “Ooho” is a flexible packaging for liquids that biodegrades in 4-6 weeks, or can even be eaten, and has been used to distribute Lucozade at the London Marathon, to provide ‘edible cocktails’ at festivals, and to replace ketchup sachets for Just Eat. The company is also developing other products that will soon be launched, including a greaseproof liner for paperboard products and a film to replace plastic wraps, all of which will also be home compostable and biodegradable in nature. THE ROLE Notpla is seeking a Food R&D Chemist on a full-time basis. We are looking for someone with a strong technical background in Natural Polymers, Food Science or Materials who can lead the development of new packaging concepts, drive relationships with external partners, and is able to evaluate, formulate and characterize new formulations to improve performance, reduce costs and enhance environmental qualities. RESPONSIBILITIES Product development for natural edible and biodegradable packaging Identifying and researching new leads to improve packaging properties, robustness and shelf-life Liaising with academic institutions and commercial labs to organize third party testing and negotiate service and product agreements * Innovate UK grant project management and execution Supervising chemistry interns with their research projects REQUIREMENTS Masters of Science degree in Chemistry / Food Chemistry / Green Chemistry / Materials Experience in product development in the food and/or packaging industry 3+ years of working in a lab environment Analytical mind-set and out of the box thinking strategy Experience working in a fast-paced start-up environment The ability to self-motivate and work without supervision. Flexibility and ability to adapt to the varying nature of projects and business needs. Excellent time management skills and ability to organize priorities according to changing requirements Must be a team player with excellent communication skills, ideally with a good command of the English language Help the company to strengthen its IP portfolio by documenting innovative solutions.
