Position Title: Our Strong Neighbourhood (OSN), Weston and Mount Dennis, Coordinator Start Date: March 2020 Reports To: Manager, Community Development Annual Salary: $52,000-$54,000 Hours: Full-time (35 hours per week) Location: 109 Lotherton & Jane Street Hub, North York For almost 30 years, North York Community House (“NYCH”) has been working with new immigrants and residents in northwest Toronto, providing the resources and opportunities they need to achieve their goals. NYCH is seeking an experienced community organizer to coordinate the Our Strong Neighbourhood (OSN) project in the Weston and Mount Dennis neighbourhoods. The aim of the OSN project is build collaborative and sustainable opportunities for communities to have greater say over local spaces and economies; strengthen networks and partnerships; and support resident capacity building, leadership and action. You will be on a team of staff who work with adults, youth and families to build strong and thriving communities built on the principles of equity, inclusion, social justice and centering resident engagement, needs and interests. Main responsibilities include: Lead the development, delivery and evaluation of community learning, engagement and leadership development opportunities for residents in the Weston and Mount Dennis Neighborhoods Coordinate leadership opportunities for residents to engage in community development and community organizing to bring community benefits to the neighborhoods Develop and maintain effective relationships and liaise with community residents, the City, developers, landlords, and other community organizations and stakeholders Maintain and foster positive relationships with funders, elected officials and government agencies Monitor and maintain the OSN project budget and other related community grants Recruit, train, and supervise/coach community animators, project volunteers and placement students Provide verbal and written reports to the agency, community/stakeholders and funders Coordinate the OSN project’s publicity and outreach strategy using a diversity of communication platforms Work with community and stakeholders to explore innovative, community-led models to engage in neighbourhood infrastructure projects and work towards inclusive local economies. Required Qualifications: Education The minimum level of education required is a post-secondary degree in community development, social work, social sciences, urban planning or related field, and or equivalent community development experience. Experience, Competencies & Skills · Three to five years’ experience working in community-based non-profits, and/or working in community development/ community organizing/ or community driven neighborhood planning. Three to five years’ experience coordinating community led/ community driven initiatives such as, leadership training and knowledge exchange programs, community asset mapping activities, coalition building and supporting local campaigns Knowledge and understanding of local issues in Weston and Mount Dennis neighborhoods Knowledge and/ or experience working in neighborhoods experiencing gentrification in Toronto, and or experience working in Neighbourhood Improvement Areas (NIA’s) Critical thinking skills – ability to see the big picture (e.g. systemic issues that impact clients), observe and analyze emerging/changing community needs, opportunities for new partnerships Excellent collaboration, partnership and network building skills Effective time management- plan, prioritize and organize tasks; juggle multiple responsibilities Informed and up-to-date on latest research, new practices, changes in legislation pertaining to position Written and verbal communication – active listener and ability to frame and communicate clear, concise and accurate reports, plans, proposals, presentations and stories to highlight community impact Anti-oppression – Demonstrated experience working with diverse communities and commitment to equity, inclusion and anti-oppression Being a resident of either the Weston or Mount Dennis neighbourhoods is an asset Other Requirements: Works a flexible 35-hour per week schedule (to be determined with supervisor), with some evening and weekend work required. Some travel required within the GTA. Responsible for carrying/caring for a laptop and cell phone. A successful clearance of criminal record verification will be required for this position.
