Description Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) Summer Technical Internships offers you an immersive professional experience in your field of study. You have the opportunity to work directly with world class engineers, scientists, researchers, and technicians who will provide you with real-world experience and mentorship. We work with state-of-the-art techniques to develop new technologies, designs, testing components, integrated systems, and operational guidance. At NNL you are a part of a team working on deliverables related to your degree that have a direct impact on the Navy’s nuclear fleet. As a part of our team, you will be instrumental in pioneering the next generation of world class submarines and air craft carriers. We rely on the dedication of our engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel. We develop the world’s best nuclear propulsion systems, train the Sailors who operate them, and provide full lifecycle support, from technology development through design to disposal. You may be engaged in a variety of different tasks in materials engineering. Some of the projects our interns have worked on in the past include: Researching and developing new materials Performing material testing to establish properties and understand material behavior. Areas of interest are heat treatment, fatigue, embrittlement, fracture mechanics, metallography, welding, and aqueous corrosion. Supporting new construction and fleet support projects with design and material selection decisions Providing operational support Working on the examination and disposal of components removed from service Naval Nuclear Laboratory's internship program is a paid position and duration takes place mid-May through late August. An internship position may result in a return or full-time employment offer upon successful completion of the program. Preferred Skills Preferred Skills Cumulative GPA 3.0/4.0 Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DOD) or Naval Nuclear Program experience Demonstrated leadership experience Demonstrated experience working with group projects or teams Involvement with professional societies Prior internship or work experience
