Please apply as soon as possible to avoid any disappointment Purpose of the job To be responsible for the care, documentation, display, interpretation, management and research of the decorative art collections in the Walker Art Gallery, Lady Lever Art Gallery and Sudley House To develop and deliver exhibition and display projects To develop a personal academic expertise within the areas of responsibility To make the collections accessible through digital engagement, interpretation, answering public enquiries, publications, research, web information, talks and contributions to education programmes To support operational and venue capital improvements across all our Art Gallery venues Main Activities Reporting to the Lead Curator of Decorative Arts and the Head of Lady Lever Art Gallery & Sudley House, you will: Provide curatorial care for and management of the decorative art collections, including their documentation, cataloguing, display and interpretation, and the monitoring of their environmental conditions in storage and on display Be responsible for the documentation of the collections, including location control on Mimsy XG, and in the record files, in line with the requirements of NML’s internal audit Liaise with the Photography Department or external photographers regarding photographing of the collections and ensure photographs are logged on the Image management system. Be aware of copyright issues. Initiate and act as lead curator on displays and exhibitions, selecting and researching NML’s collections and /or collaborating with external partners Answer public enquiries, including giving opinions on objects, showing visitors works in stores and providing access to archival material Liaise over collections’ movement, display and storage with colleagues in the Estates, Collections Care and Exhibitions Departments and assist with handling objects Develop and disseminate knowledge of the collections and decorative art displays through research and publication Research and recommend potential acquisitions and accession new acquisitions Advise on decorative art loans , including providing valuations, and support their administration, working with NML’s Registrars Act as a courier for loans, nationally and internationally, in liaison with colleagues in Collections Care and NML’s Registrars Work with colleagues across NML to contribute to access and audience development targets through display, interpretation and educational projects Liaise with colleagues in the Learning and Participation Department over public programmes by contributing talks, lectures and guided tours of the collections, and by providing information for resources Liaise with and provide information to colleagues in the Marketing and Communications Departments for publicity and press Represent the Department at press calls and other media opportunities Represent the Department and Division at both internal and external meetings, as required Identify and develop opportunities for partnership working with other museums, professional organisations and educational institutions to support the development of the collections, our knowledge of them and public access to them Contribute to effective and efficient use of resources, including ordering of supplies and record keeping to support budget management by the Lead Curator of Decorative Arts and the Head of Lady Lever Art Gallery & Sudley House Assist with sponsorship and fundraising initiatives to ensure that we maximise income generation opportunities, by liaising with colleagues in NML’s Development Office and our Enterprises and Visitor Experiences Division Support the development of other departmental colleagues, as agreed with the Lead Curator of Decorative Arts and the Head of Lady Lever Art Gallery & Sudley House Supervise volunteers and work placement students, undertaking their training and support together with other colleagues in the Art Galleries Division and NML’s People Department Provide proactive and effective line management within the Decorative Arts department Adhere to the standards expected of all public services as defined by HM Treasury publication “Managing Public Money”.
