The Firm Mishcon de Reya is an independent law firm, which now employs more than 900 people with over 550 lawyers offering a wide range of legal services to companies and individuals. The IP Group We are one of the largest IP practices in the UK with more than 40 lawyers and trade mark attorneys, and advise the owners of some of the world's most famous IP rights. We work across a range of sectors including technology, automotive, pharma, betting & gaming, sport, retail, fashion, media, and hospitality. Renowned for innovation in developing new services and products that provide a return on investment for our clients, we have recently launched MDR Brand Management, the first brand management business launched by a leading law firm in the UK. The Group won TMT Firm (Specialism) of the Year in Brand Management at The Legal 500 UK Awards 2017 and was instrumental in the firm's award of Global Luxury Law Firm of the Year 2019 at the Luxury Law Summit. Our IP Group comprises three teams: IP Disputes, Commercial (including Data Protection, Sport and Life Sciences), and Brands and Brand Management. This role is in the IP Disputes team. Mishcon has one of the most comprehensive dispute resolution offerings in London and we are a leading UK IP enforcement practice, with vast experience across all IP rights. Our clients include Sky, Ladbrokes Coral, Nintendo, Iceland Foods, Hewlett Packard, Pfizer, and many other high profile rights owners. We are regularly instructed in high-stakes and complex litigation and enforcement work, including groundbreaking cases before the UK and EU Courts. Examples cases in recent years include: Sky v SkyKick (CJEU), Lupin v Gilead (CJEU and Court of Appeal), Nintendo v Sky & ors, and Rihanna v TopShop. Because we work in partnership with our clients over the long term, we not only understand how their businesses and sector operate, we are also able to give clients definitive views on the strength of their legal position – we are not lawyers who sit on the fence. The Role The role is within the IP Group's Disputes team. It will involve largely advising on a varied range of disputes and related advisory work concerning soft IP (trade marks, designs, copyright and confidential information). As our Patents practice has grown in recent years, there may also be the opportunity for interested candidates to work on exciting and important patent disputes across a range of technologies. The team's work also involves advising on some more commercial disputes, to which there will be an IP angle, although the actual claim may be in contract, fraud or tort, such as licensing disputes. There will be a range of general IP advisory work, such as how to minimise the risk of an IP infringement, how best to protect a client's intellectual property, and advice in relation to advertising clearance/ASA disputes and related matters. The candidate will work for up to four different partners in the Disputes team. They will also work closely with other colleagues in the team, and with colleagues in the other teams in the Group, and will develop relationships across the Firm. Attributes and Experience We are seeking candidates with broad "hands on" experience who possess the following attributes: Strong contentious IP experience, gained within in private practice. A keen interest in IP law, with a solid grounding in its basics, and a commitment to building a career in IP. Has undertaken the Oxford IP Diploma or an interest in doing so. Excellent written and interpersonal skills. Able to manage a diverse portfolio of client work allocated by the Group partners. Able to work independently and manage a varied workload, ensuring excellent communication lines with Matter Partners. Excellent team working skills. At all times, to exercise high standards of client care and service in a professional and pleasant manner. Strong organisational and prioritising skills, in order to meet the demands of challenging and commercial internal and external clients, and competing priorities. Personable and confident, able to ensure good working relationships with colleagues, clients and external organisations. Resilient and calm under pressure. Able to work independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates a hunger to undertake business development activities, both internally amongst colleagues across the firm, and externally to existing and potential new clients.
