Position Description Position: Food Services Coordinator Reports to: Deputy Director of MLC Marshmead Department: Education Outdoors - Marshmead Date: February 2020 Primary Purpose All staff at MLC Marshmead work to ensure a learning environment which stimulates the interest of each student to learn. The Food Services Coordinator provides an essential support mechanism to the smooth running of the MLC Marshmead program. Their work involves a variety of catering related tasks and includes working closely with students. The Food Services Coordinator is responsible for ordering, delivery and presentation of food for the Marshmead community. The role is also responsible for the monitoring and management of food waste. Position in Context MLC Marshmead is a 114 hectare property, located on a remote and environmentally sensitive site in far eastern Victoria, surrounded by the Croajingolong National Park. Access to the property is either by boat (25 minutes over the lake to Mallacoota) or by vehicle (1:20 hour to Mallacoota, 1:30 hour to Eden). The property includes a residential village (consisting of both staff and student housing) and a working farm. Produce from the farm is used by the MLC Marshmead community. Staff at MLC Marshmead live and work on site. Residential staff are housed in comfortable, shared accommodation and these houses have been designed with ESD principles in mind. Water is solar heated (wood heater boosted) and houses use wood heaters as the principle source of heating. The ‘village’ operates on a remote area power supply, limiting the use of some electrical items and water is obtained from either rain harvesting or the local creek. Twenty three staff (residential and day staff), comprising teachers, assistants and specialist staff, work in a team to ensure the delivery of a curriculum for 65-72 Year 9 students each term. MLC Marshmead offers a unique teaching environment with its close proximity to the National Park and a local Biosphere Reserve. The curriculum at MLC Marshmead focuses on environmental sustainability, personal sustainability and sustainable communities. It enables each student to actively experience learning about the environment, their peers and themselves in a practical sense and consider their role in promoting a sustainable future. The students manage their own living arrangements in comfortable environmentally sustainable designed ‘family’ homes. Students make a voluntary decision to participate in this eight week program. A new group of students participate each term. 1 Key Contacts Internal Director of MLC Marshmead Deputy Director of MLC Marshmead Catering Team Assistant Farm Manager All Marshmead Staff Director of Remote Sites MLC Staff (Kew and Banksia) where relevant Students External Parents / Guardians Food Suppliers Shire of East Gippsland Major Duties and Responsibilities Work autonomously to manage stock rotation and order all food and cleaning supplies for the entire MLC Marshmead to ensure the community is safe and healthy. Coordinate the weekly MLC Marshmead food pickup and delivery process. Mentor, coordinate & task the catering assistant in the day to day operation of the MLC Marshmead commercial kitchen. Support and assist students in their menu planning and food ordering Responsible for managing the Marshmead food budget on a day to day basis. The incumbent works collaboratively with the Deputy Director to provide recommendations to the Director regarding capital and recurrent catering items. Responsible for the cleanliness of food areas and the management of the MLC Marshmead catering facilities in accordance with statutory requirements. Collaboratively develops, facilitates, and delivers nutritionally sound, economical and tasty communal meals to up to 100 people in a timely fashion that provide for the diverse dietary requirements of the community. Plans for and delivers the components of the food curriculum and ensures a link between the food requirements of the village, seasonal produce and the productivity of the farm. Assisting with the wellbeing of students as a cluster team member, including the regular monitoring and updating of pastoral care information. Is a residential member of the MLC Marshmead community who is fully involved in MLC Marshmead program and the running of the MLC Marshmead Village. This can include OHS meetings, training, and optional activities. Person Specification Essential Criteria (competencies, qualifications, knowledge and experience) Ability to determine priorities and ensure deadlines are met. Able to receive and provide regular feedback about their role and areas they are responsible for managing. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a proven ability to build and maintain positive relationships with members of the MLC community, 2 including staff, parents and students, working effectively across diverse groups. Collaborative team member. Good computer skills required in particular Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and E-mail. Acts professionally and maintains appropriate confidentiality. Ability to live in a small community and contribute to the wellbeing of other people. A commitment to principles of conservation and knowledge and an interest in global environmental issues related to food availability. Specialist knowledge and experience in food preparation, nutrition, and their understanding of health and hygiene regulations. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional learning. Experience for cooking for large groups of people with diverse dietary needs. Adherence to all College policies and demonstration of behaviours in accordance with the Child Safe Standards. Desirable Criteria (competencies, qualifications, knowledge and experience) Food industry qualifications and experience. Understanding of the statutory legislation relating to industrial kitchen operation. MLC performs thorough assessments of potential and existing employees.
