Respond to the scene of all reportable deaths that occur in Mesa County, obtain information concerning the circumstances surrounding the death, examine the decedent for postmortem changes and trauma, document and safeguard personal effects until released to next of kin, establish positive identification of the decedent, locate and notify next of kin in a timely compassionate professional manner, obtain identifying information about the decedent, obtain medical history of the decedent when appropriate, determine the necessity for an autopsy in conjunction with the coroner, ensure the protection of trace evidence on the decedent until it can be properly evaluated, documented and collected; assist with autopsies as needed. Essential Duties: (The following duty statements are illustrative of the essential functions of the job and do not include other non-essential or marginal duties that may be required. Mesa County reserves the right to modify or change the duties or essential functions of this job at any time. All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.) Be available by pager or phone 24 hours a day 7 days a week for a timely response to the scene of all reportable deaths that occur in Mesa County. Ensure positive identification of the decedent is made and the immediate next of kin is notified of the death in a timely professional and compassionate manner. Ability to interact and communicate with family members and friends in a comforting compassionate manner. Proficient time management skills, ability to work with minimal supervision, to ensure timely response, notification of next of kin, and the completion of all required reports and documents. Ability to evaluate observations of the scene, and the examination of the decedent with the history provided. Ability to interact with federal, state and local agencies involved in the death investigation. Ability to interact with other professionals to ensure the timely completion of required reports and forms to ensure final disposition of the decedent. Ability to identify, properly preserve and document evidence. Ability to keep current on scientific technology and investigative techniques. Attendance at autopsies, as needed or required. Oral and written communications must be clear and effective. Performs other related duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements: Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent and five (5) years experience in death investigation (preferred). Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job. Licenses and Certifications: American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators Certification (must be obtained after hire) Supplemental Information: PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: This position requires standing, stooping, sitting, bending, twisting, and lifting in excess of 100 pounds. May be exposed to communicable diseases, infections, blood and bodily fluids. Varied hours/modified work schedule with pager rotation (24 hours/7 days per week).
