English Editor Permanent Full Time Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Edits examination content, related documentation and training materials at various stages of development to meet approved standards. Collaborates with French editors, Test Development Officers, Training Officers, Instructional Designer and other members of the Evaluation Bureau to support the development of high-quality content. Provides linguistic quality control in English through substantive editing, copy/stylistic editing and proofreading. What you’ll do Evaluates the quality of content and determines whether it is suitable for the audience, medium and purpose Reorganizes material to ensure a coherent structure and a logical progression of ideas; establishes a clear hierarchy of information; recasts materials that would be better presented in another form Queries or resolves inaccuracies, incomplete ideas, unclear information, imbalanced content, etc. Provides stylistic edits as needed (edits for clarity, coherence and flow and refines the language) Corrects usage, grammatical, punctuation and spelling errors Consistently applies editorial style Corrects inaccurate information and addresses incomplete information Prepares copy for design, upload to or export from the item bank or for print What you need to succeed Language Excellent oral and written skills in English; Oral and written skills in French is a strong asset Education A bachelor’s degree from a recognized university, with a specialization in language, literature, journalism or a related field Certification in editing or medical editing an asset Experience Minimum 3 years’ experience with substantive editing, stylistic editing, copy editing and proofreading a variety of documentation in English Experience revising the work of external service providers to maintain standards (for example, freelance editors) Experience providing writing and editing advice to colleagues, senior staff members and management Experience with editing medical or health texts or other complex scientific or technical documents is preferred Technical Skills: Excellent knowledge of the recognized principles and practices in the field of editing In-depth knowledge of the rules of English language and standards of style and grammar Knowledge of the principles and practices of terminological research and experience using a variety of language reference materials and tools Strong computer skills and skills working in Microsoft Office; experience with using content management systems. Knowledge of medical terminology or medical editing an asset Knowledge of HTML an asset Competencies: Highly developed attention to detail Ability to meet deadlines while multi-tasking and managing shifting priorities Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills. Experience working in a team environment, with demonstrated personal leadership and collaboration skills.
