Primary function This Staff lawyer will be required to provide Family and Criminal duty counsel services in the Durham Region primarily, but some travel within the tri-countries (Peterborough, Lindsay, Cobourg and their satellite locations) may be required. For this reason only applicants with readily available transportation will be considered. Key accountabilities Act as Hybrid Family and Criminal Duty Counsel Ability to provide advice lawyer services at the Family Law Information Centre (FLIC) Provide family law services and representation in the Ontario/Superior Court of Justice as required Provide criminal law services as defense counsel in the Ontario Court of Justice Ensure high quality legal work in a cost effective manner Record data and produce reports as required, using the Duty Counsel Worksheet and other recording methods Required skills & experience Lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada Knowledge and experience of all relevant criminal, youth criminal and family law legislation (including child protection law) Both Criminal law and Family Law experience required Ability to work in a fast paced environment Ability to work independently Ability to work as a team with other staff lawyers and per diem Duty Counsel Sound judgment and problem solving skills Ability to communicate in French is an asset Must have access to own transportation Preferred Skills & Experiences: Sound Knowledge of Legal Aid Ontario’s operations and mandate Demonstrated interest in aboriginal legal issues Training or advocacy experience in relation to mental health issues Demonstrated ability to use latest communication technologies including Smartphones, iPad and iPhone. Must have intermediate knowledge of the following Microsoft programs; Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Experience with Divorcemate would be an asset. Experience with Service Integration and LegalFiles would be an asset First Preference will be given to current lawyer applicants who are on the LAO redeployment list. This position is collectively represented by the Society of United Professionals (SUP) and the successful incumbent will be governed by the provisions of a collective agreement and subject to union dues.
