Position Summary: The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for all aspects of new product development involving conceptualization, concurrent engineering development, production implementation and post-launch support in a cross-functional team environment. This position plans, directs, and coordinates manufacturing processes utilizing engineering, and LEAN training. The Mechanical Engineer will develop, evaluate and improve manufacturing methods, utilizing knowledge of product design, materials and parts, fabrication processes, tooling and production equipment capabilities, assembly methods, and quality control standards. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Analyzes and designs work force/process utilization, space requirements, and workflow, and designs layout of equipment and workspace for maximum efficiency Confers with planning and design staff concerning product design and tooling to ensure efficient production methods Confers with vendors to determine product specifications and arrange for purchase of equipment, tools, materials, or parts, and evaluates products according to specifications, safety, and quality standards Creates standardized work and work instructions; estimates production times, staffing requirements, and related costs to provide information for management and accounting decisions Confers with management, engineering, and other staff regarding manufacturing capabilities, production schedules, and other considerations to facilitate safe production processes Applies statistical methods to estimate future manufacturing requirements and potential. Responsible for the analysis of manufacturing and production methods, lean manufacturing initiatives, facility layout processes, tools and systems required for the company’s manufacturing and fabrication activities Defines, develops, and implements the most efficient manufacturing process methods, parameters, and procedures for existing and new process Provide technical review and assistance to engineering and manufacturing to find, support, and implement new and emerging process technologies Operates under minimal supervision with wide latitude for independent judgment to ensure process robustness and keeping up with best practices through strategy, investment, value analysis, communication, resources (internal and external), and contractual aspects Responsible for all aspects of process development and improvement measured through safety, quality, velocity, cost, innovation, and new sales enhancements; Safety; internal requirements, local and national regulation requirements Quality in reduction of scrap and rework, process variability reduction Velocity in terms of capacity, productivity, and lead time, etc. Cost reduction; process improvement, reduction in labor or material, replacement of old equipment Innovation and sales; replacing outdated technologies, new production lines, facilities, etc. Serve as Project Manufacturing Team Champion and Support, as required; Coordinates and monitors manufacturing projects from initiation through delivery Ensures that manufacturing projects are completed on schedule and within budget This position is usually responsible for complex projects Ability to travel to vendors to discuss technical issues Promotes a safety-oriented culture Must adhere to all company policies, procedures and safety regulations Must be willing to perform other duties as requested, directed or assigned Education/Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent 2 - 5 years of experience Prototyping experience Experience welding Fabrication experience Experience with mechanics of materials Machine shop experience (Lathe, Mill, etc.) Must have intermediate/advanced computer skills with the following applications: MS Office Suite (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), ACT, MAS, SolidWorks (CAD), and internet Must be able to type 35-WPM with 98% accuracy Must have high aptitude, ability to learn systems/products/product applications quickly Must have ability to formulate policies and procedures Must have excellent oral and written communication skills Must have good manual dexterity Ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept direction on given assignments Willingness to work overtime when necessary Must be organized and detail oriented Must be able to meet deadlines and work under pressure Must be a team player with a positive attitude Physical Demands: The physical demands are representative of the physical requirements necessary for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Specific physical demands include: Stand or Sit: Must be able to sit/stand in a relatively stationary position 75 percent of the time. Walk: The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office and warehouse to access file cabinets, materials, machinery, etc.; as well as, attend meetings; or discuss business issues with other departments; includes occasional use of stairs. Use hands/fingers to handle or feel: Occasionally required to use a computer and other office productivity machinery (i.e., a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer). Must be able to use fingers/hands to perform assembly of small parts, as well as be able to glue parts together firmly. Must have good manual dexterity. Involves repetitious motion and ability to grasp parts/tools for extended period of time; may include handling of fiberglass rods. Climb (stairs/ladders) or balance: Occasionally ascends/descends steps or uses a ladder for purposes of getting parts off of a shelf. Stoop, Kneel, Crouch, or Crawl: Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch. Talk/Hear: The person in this position frequently communicates with customers/employees/vendors and must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations, which requires the ability to talk and hear. See: Constantly looks upon a computer screen/monitor within close proximity 1-2 feet for purposes of preparing documentation, contracts, e-mail correspondence, etc. Must be able to see raw materials and parts for safe assembly/production. Carry Weight, Lift: Regularly required to lift/carry/move supplies/parts/products greater than 25-pounds for examination of quality.
