History of James Whelan Butchers James Whelan Butchers are fifth generations butchers and farmers, founded in the 1960’s by husband and wife team James and Joan Whelan. The business was born by merging these two great traditions together to create a family business that had humble beginnings in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary. The current CEO Pat Whelan, James and Joan’s son, has been at the helm since 1999 and has developed the brand nationally and internationally, creating award winning artisan products, which appear on the shelves of some of the leading national and international retailers. In the early 2000’s, James Whelan Butchers introduced the first online butchers in Ireland and the business was also the first retail butcher to become part of the Origin Green programme, working with Bord Bia to protect Ireland’s natural resources and to ensure the highest levels of sustainability in everything that the company does. In 2011 James Whelan Butchers launched its first collaboration with Avoca and now there are two James Whelan craft butcher shops in Avoca outlets, in Rathcoole and Kilmacanogue. Bringing the brand to an international audience, in 2015, James Whelan Butchers Beef Dripping, based on a family recipe going back generations, was announced winner of the coveted International Golden Fork Award, competing against 10,000 international products. Now this product is on sale in major stores internationally such as Harrods, Whole Foods and Fortnum & Mason. Then in 2016, James Whelan Butchers launched its collaboration with Ireland’s leading retailer Dunnes Stores, also a family business with immense heritage and a strong sense of pride in delivering quality products to its loyal customers for generations. This collaboration has led to the opening of five James Whelan Butchers shops in Leinster, Cornelscourt, Rathmines, Swords, Blanchardstown, Naas and another due to open in Leopardstown in 2021. In Munster we currently have shops in Cork, Limerick, Clonmel with another due to open in 2021 in Tralee. In our Shop
