Toxicology and Regulatory Affairs Manager - (200000A0) Description Intertek, a leading provider of ATIC (Assurance, Testing, Inspection and Certification) Services, is looking for an Scientific & Regulatory Affairs Manager-Toxicology to join our Health, Environmental and Regulatory Services team located in Mississauga, Ontario. Summary: By delegation from the Senior Director, the Manager has responsibility for providing effective and competent office support to the Branch in a safe, legal, and ethical manner To analyse, interpret scientific issues, and prepare professional quality reports, which interpret and summarize these issues Manage projects efficiently and effectively The position of Manager provides hands on leadership of projects but also completes the bulk of the scientific interpretive work in preparation of final reports The Manager oversees the work of assigned associate toxicologists and other professional staff Provide leadership to project teams May be asked to provide information on performance of those assigned to their projects The Manager reports to the Senior Director Qualifications Responsibilities: AS A SCIENTIST Review and interpret published/unpublished scientific materials, at first as individual studies/reports but finally in relation to each other. This will involve working with Manager/Senior Scientist/Project Manager or as Project Manager to set up the scope and breadth of the project. NB: It is important in this respect to keep in mind the intent of the report. In some instances, studies should, for example, include the cellular mechanism causing a change; in other cases, it is sufficient just to know the basic effect on human health. While this position sets limits to the research ahead of time, it is important for the incumbent to remain open to new information and possibilities, to balance science and business, and to encourage toxicologists carrying out special studies to begin to develop this perspective/recognize when they have enough information. Reviewing the project plan periodically with the Manager/Senior Scientist/BAC Review basic project issues considering special expertise needed/who should be assigned to the projects; where the incumbent has previous experience with similar projects, the incumbent will perform those tasks needed to complete the project, subject only to occasional review by the Senior Scientist (as well as review of the final report) or another Scientist, in conjunction with a review of the final report by another Scientist or Senior Scientist Review reports written by others that are to be incorporated into the study. The reports (final reports) are reviewed in detail by the Manager/Senior Scientist Monitor budget with respect to amount of work remaining; proactively work with or as Project Manager (and client as needed) if there may be possible budget over run Review and approve draft invoices Communicate with client as needed, requesting information or explaining the planned course of action Excellent customer service skills Excellent communication skills in both verbal and written format Excellent organization and time management skills Effective business writing and composition skills with a good command of the English language Ability to analyze and solve problems Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment Ability to pay attention to detail Ability to type quickly and accurately Microsoft Office software expertise Sufficient scientific experience to be able to establish the scope and work plan for reasonably complicated projects Strong integrating and motivating skills to meet more complex project schedules/deadlines Ability to provide leadership guide the work of less experienced staff (coaching Associate staff) Ability to communicate effectively especially with other scientists/professionals Developed written skills as a professional scientist TECHNICAL SCIENCE ISSUES Decide in detail the approach needed to resolve problem, e.g., what is known about the type of problem involved, and what standards are applicable Decide generally how research is to be conducted; the types of study that will be relevant/not relevant, e.g., pest control product, a pharmaceutical product under review in preparation for regulatory submission would need to be reviewed with appropriate regulatory standards in mind Tasks typically involve dealing simultaneously with many variables, each of which may be highly complex and multidimensional Exercises judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. AS A PROJECT MANAGER Develop realistic budgets and timelines Explain study in detail and reviewing tentative limits to it, ensuring staff understand what scientific information they are looking for Ensure all project documentation (e.g., confidentiality & consulting agreements, PIFs, budgets, etc.) are placed in client file Ensure associate toxicologists review research papers carefully to extract both metabolic and strict toxicity information as well as to identify any other potential avenues of research Review work of toxicologists, assisting them to assess risks, and encouraging more senior toxicologists to prepare interpretative summaries of findings Help toxicologists to write properly (more junior staff will require extensive and repeated editing; more senior staff generally know how to lay out scientific information correctly, although this must be carefully checked - first level of internal quality control) Provide regular feedback to both client and team members on status of project Manage projects and client relationships cost-effectively Deliver project reports to client on time, on spec and on budget Ensure work is kept focused on the client’s needs for information (which may differ from his/her perceived needs. When this happens, incumbent reviews situation with Manager/Senior Scientist Make decisions about work to be done, work standards Accountable for quality of work done as project manager. AS A CONSULTANT Has client interaction on most projects. These contacts are vital to the success of the projects; e.g., it is helpful to be able to communicate with client so that changes to the progress of the regulatory process or issues that arise during the review process are provided in a timely manner Develop relationships with existing clients and identifies business opportunities through these relationships. These are typically related projects, which the incumbent may conduct independently although in consultation as needed with Manager/Senior Scientist Marketing Initiatives: Scientists assist with marketing initiatives and developing a plan of action for success of marketing endeavours of the BA Carrying out all responsibilities in a supportive manner with total adherence to: The Company’s Health, Safety and Environmental Policies and Procedures, Quality Management System, Compliance and Ethics Policies, Vision, Mission and Strategy, and exercises good judgment, common sense, and diplomacy Education: B.Sc. (Toxicology) with 5 to 8 years or M.Sc. with 2-5 years’ experience, Ph.D. with 0-1 years of experience.
