BASIC FUNCTION OF THE JOB: This summer student will assist a group of engineers within IR Engineering to develop automated solutions for completing repetitive production tasks. This work involves working with other groups within the factory to identify repetitive production tasks that would benefit most from an automated solution. Several of these tasks will be identified within the first week of the internship and an automation plan will be developed for each task. The summer student will likely perform tasks that include programming a collaborative robot, working with microcontrollers/PLC's, and designing tooling and fixturing. Documentation of design work, analyses, and process improvements must be completed as well. REQUIREMENTS: Education: 2+ years of coursework in Engineering, Physics, Math, Computer Science, Mechatronics Experience: Experience with industrial robots, microcontrollers, PLC's, and computer programming is advantageous. Special Abilities: Basic machine shop skills. Good 3-D spatial skills. RESPONSIBILITIES: Confidentiality: Knowledge of II-VI proprietary information such as processes, designs and specifications. May have limited access to proprietary manufacturing equipment and process documentation. Due to ITAR compliance, this position requires candidates to be a U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident Alien, or Protected Individual per 8 U.S.C.1324b(a)(3). Contact with others: This person will work with the IR engineering group to provide automated solutions to other groups within the facility. This will include working with engineers, operators, and technicians from these other groups. Errors: Errors incur significant costs to company. This person should always take precautions to reduce the frequency and mitigate the effects of errors. JOB CONDITIONS: Working Conditions: This person will split time between an office setting and a production floor environment. Mental/Visual Demand: This person must be able to multi-task and be comfortable working on multi-disciplinary projects where the work may change from day-to-day depending on the project requirements. Vision-correctable acuity of 20/20.
