Position Summary: Harman International is seeking a patent attorney with patent prosecution experience who will assist the Intellectual Property team with general intellectual property matters. The Intellectual Property team is accountable for maximizing the value of Harman’s intellectual property worldwide while minimizing the impact of third-party intellectual property rights on Harman’s technical and/or commercial strategies. The IP Counsel will be expected to support various worldwide technical portfolios in assessing the best approach and strategy for handling the Harman invention records to fit the overall IP-protection strategy of the company. IP Counsel will also be expected to provide management and support for Harman in India to ensure creation, maintenance and defense of a strong IP position, protection of know-how and risk management, to safeguard Harman´s market position in India in alignment with the Business Units, Division Technology & innovation and Global Intellectual Property Management. Activities may include licensing and contractual matters, utility/design patent prosecution, enforcement of IP, researching infringements, drafting C&D letters, patent litigation, patent clearances, and patentability and free to operate reviews and analysis. Job Responsibilities: Manage a global docket of patent matters in one or more technology areas including preparing and prosecuting patent applications before worldwide patent offices. Oversee global outside counsel and provide guidance and instructions based on principles of patent prosecution, the technology/product and roadmaps, and corporate strategy, and global portfolio maintenance decisions. Support various members of the Legal team in M&A transactions with respect to IP due diligence. Collaborate across law department groups, business units and functions to improve patent operations and business processes. Draft, review and negotiate routine types of IP terms and clause for agreements, including nondisclosure, development, collaboration and licensing agreements, with, clients, suppliers, and other law department groups. Directly interact with the business product teams and research technology teams to support new product and project development. Advise and counsel internal business units on various IP matters with a particular focus on global patent issues. Interact directly with engineering to harvest invention disclosures and provide IP training. Support internal clients by providing strategic patent advice on Harman’s patent portfolio and managing risk with respect to third party portfolios. Participate in Intellectual Property Review Board meetings. Assist in patent divestitures, acquisitions and licensing activities; Work with a global team of patent professionals made up of attorneys, paralegals and patent engineers to define and refine processes used in global patent operations. Provide patent analysis for all contexts, including litigation, potential acquisition, and licensing. Assist in proactive, strategic management of patent litigation and patent assertions. Basic Qualifications: Diploma/MSc in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Science or related field (Engineering, Physics, etc.); PhD and/or experience in audio components and corporate R&D preferred Patent Attorney or comparable qualification At least 5 years of patent prosecution experience plus in-house professional experience as IP counsel, preferably in Automotive or Consumer Electronics Excellent communication in English (written and spoken) Highly motivated and proactive demanour, strategic thinking and business-affinity, able to set priorities and manage high workload, customer focussed, excellent interpersonal/communication skills and stakeholder management, open-minded, leading by example Law firm, in-house or other comparable experience with large and complex IP portfolios a plus. Drafted and prosecuted patent applications before a patent office. Knowledge of utility, design, copyright and other IP areas needed. Excellent patent analysis abilities, including development of non-infringement/infringement, invalidity/validity and claim construction positions Excellent web-based and other investigation and research skills/experience are needed. Should have sound computer skills including IP maintenance database software (e.g. Anaqua), PPT and Excel. Experience drafting IP related contractual documents such as co-existence and settlement agreements, and licenses highly desired. Ability to work independently and cross-functionally. Ability to prioritize and appropriately manage risk in a corporate legal environment. Desire and ability to work in a fast-paced and challenging environment. Flexibility and a positive attitude. Excellent work ethic. Must be able to travel (approximately 20%). Work well in a team environment. Very good organizational skills and attention to detail, including the ability to prioritize and multi-task and keep everything going smoothly without dropping any balls. Excellent written and oral communication skills, including presentations to senior business, technical and legal personnel. Eligibility Requirements: Willingness to travel.
