Position Summary: To make a measurable contribution, enabling Griffith Foods Canada to continue to grow and operate in an effective, efficient and profitable manner. Execute original ideas for new research projects and/or solutions to complex problems demonstrating a high degree of creativity and ingenuity. Act as a mentor to more junior scientists. Manage multiple projects independently. Requires management of cross-functional resources, responsible and accountable for project outcome. Major Responsibilities: · Reports to the R & D Management Level, conducts scientific experimentation contributing to new knowledge, products or technology to Griffith Foods Canada on an ongoing basis and communicate all relevant matters pertaining to Research and Development. · Responsible for the successful implementation and completion of R & D projects. · Responsible to assist and contribute to the Innovation process at Griffith Foods. · Leads multiple priorities, projects and timelines concurrently. · Uses technical and problem-solving skills to approach complex projects. · Takes on the role of Project Leader, acts as a mentor to more junior scientists. · Works with considerable independence, exercising ingenuity and judgement in the approach to tasks. Responsible for the design, planning, execution, and reporting of experiments and projects of considerable complexity. · Executes detailed recommendations for new products, processes, techniques or solutions to problems. · Maintains good laboratory records and provides reports, tables, graphs, product information, presentations, etc. · Acquires and maintains the necessary technical skills and scientific knowledge through reading and training in new technologies and shares/updates/educates the group and/or participates in industry associations or activities where possible. · Communicates professionally to all departments of Griffith Foods, clients, and suppliers as required. Have established relationships with clients. · Be a technical resource to all departments of Griffith Foods, clients, and suppliers as required. Capable of the following: · Operates specialized meat processing equipment and instruments. · Evaluates, analyzes and tests raw materials, product formulae and food applications. · Lead in production trials of new processes or manufacturing procedures. · Travel as required. · Lead plant personnel in the use of instruments and equipment. · Lead in product presentations. · Troubleshoots and processes improvement of production lines. · Trains Griffith Personnel. · Evaluates competitive products. · Participates in sensory evaluations. · Knowledge of meat processing procedures and meat product development processes. · Working knowledge of regulations and food safety. · Flexible/extended hours may be required to meet project deadlines. · Demonstrates an understanding of Griffith Foods capabilities. · Participates in special projects, other duties or tasks that may be assigned as required. · Ensures the health, safety, cleanliness, and security of the work environment. · Ensures compliance with all product safety, legality and quality requirements. · Understands and complies with all company policies and procedures. General Overall Team Responsibilities: · To communicate effectively with internal and external personnel at all levels representing the company in a professional manner at all times. · To participate cooperatively as an employee within the company Performance Management system as well as in personal development or performance coaching programs (as required). · To actively participate in company, staff or individual one-on-one meetings on an ongoing basis for the purposes of effective teamwork, enhanced communication and progressive cooperation strategies with all other departments across the company. · To continually contribute to the profitability of the company and ongoing business operations by initiating, recommending and implementing continuous improvement strategies and initiatives. · To conduct any general duties, specific projects and responsibilities as assigned or required by the Manager in a timely and professional manner. Position Requirements Minimum Education Requirement: Bachelor of Science in Food Science, Food Technology, Food Chemistry or related technical degree. Minimum Experience & Training Requirement: · Minimum 7 years of Research & Product Development experience within the food industry, preferably related to meat or protein processing. Contacts & Working Relationships: · Considerable interpersonal skills are required in the performance of the position responsibilities. External contacts are a requirement of the position with first or second level representatives from external organizations. Job Environment: · Occasional Exposure to Uncomfortable Environmental Working Conditions. Environmental working conditions infrequently impact job performance. Activities of the position may require infrequent exposure to situations or environments that could result in considerable discomfort and/or a moderate risk of accident or illness. Work involves occasional exposure to hazardous materials, situations or several unpleasant environmental factors, which may include heat, inclement weather, noise or physical danger.
