Engineering Team Culture At Gorgias, our core value is putting customers needs first. For the engineering team, this means that when we are creating a new feature, fixing a bug or communicating with customers we always need to have this in the back of the mind: Customer is first, then the rest. It's good to ask some of the following questions from time to time: Does the thing I'm currently working on help our customers? How do I know/measure that the thing I will release is actually useful? What else do we value? Getting stuff done If our code is not used it doesn't matter how pretty it is. That is why we have a strong bias towards shipping stuff that works and used by customers. On the other hand we also value quality, reliability and performance. The trick is to find the balance between the two. When in doubt it's best to deploy an initial version, get feedback and iterate until we have something that we are proud to call our work and the customers are satisfied. Ownership Welcome to Gorgias! You're working on a real-world application that is used by lots of customers. The tech specs are sometimes incomplete, the servers are always crashing, the people who review your code are sometimes late, APIs will break, customers will not understand your features, etc... It's hard for us so that it's easy for our customers. That is why each one of us is responsible for the features we create, improving existing ones and crushing bugs. It's on us to figure out how to use what's available to deliver results. Teamwork We're in this together and we're all human. We all have different strengths and weaknesses. We're not afraid to ask for help or clarification when we're stuck. We are verbose about what we're doing and help others in need even if it's not our responsibility. You are not alone - we elevate each other. Excellence We're constantly working hard towards becoming a better version of ourselves. Doesn't matter what we're working on, we try to do it better next time (include a dose of pragmatism here). We also understand that making mistakes is the natural result of growth. We own our mistakes and are deliberate about improving ourselves and others around us. We also give and take direct negative feedback in private and praise others in public. Agility Our competitors employ hundreds of engineers, raised a ton of cash, have more customers, etc.. On the other hand we never have enough people, money, time, etc.. We make do with what we have and deliver results anyway. Being small is also a natural protection against bloat and is forcing us to focus on what's important. Keeping this mindset as we grow will be key for our long term health as a team. Finally remember to have some fun, it's a great time to be alive! Get to know the other people in the company, there's a lot more to Gorgias than engineering. We're from all over the place and there's a lot to learn from each other.
