What responsibilities will you have in this role? Reporting to the Vice President, Student Success, the Director, Student Engagement & Career Success leads a team of professionals to establish the foundation for the development of skills and experiences that position George Brown College (GBC) students for career and personal success. Through a partnership-based approach, the Director works across the college to engage key collaborators in developing an outcomes-based framework for new student orientation & transition, career planning and development, co-curricular experiential learning, entrepreneurship programming and human skills development. The Director leads a newly established high performing team of four managers Career Planning & Development, Student Engagement (includes Orientation, Residence, and student government relations), startGBC (entrepreneurship), engageGBC (co-curricular experiential learning)) and two Student Success Consultants, who focus on academic partnerships to promote career and human skills development through meaningful engagement and co-curricular experiences. Engages in the development of the broader College strategic plans to support student learning and success and provides connection to, and oversight of, deliverables within the portfolio. Provides vision, leadership, direction, advocacy, and operational management with respect to the student experience by monitoring internal and external variables and factors to inform the design, delivery and evaluation of programs and services within a complex portfolio delivered by a diverse and professional team. Provides vision and leadership for faculty, staff, and administrator development in areas critical to the student experience. Ensures that all program areas align with and reflect student learning outcomes as identified for each program and unit through ongoing co-curricular program development. Leads assessment projects to evaluate outcomes, engagement and satisfaction with departmental programs and services in order to inform practice, policy, and planning within the division and the College. Collaboratively leads the development of common curriculum at the college to ensure that students are actively engaged in ongoing career planning & development – across all academic centres, in engaging with service providers, and through academic and co-curricular experiential learning. Serves as the subject matter expert on the future of work and skills development, and career planning and development, to inform deliberations, committee decisions, and policy directions for the areas of leadership in a variety of college forums. Provides intelligent and grounded contributions to inform college-wide recruitment, persistence/retention, and graduation elements of student success planning through participation college committees and related working groups. Compiles and assesses/monitors data (e.g., Key Performance Indicators, coordinated co-curricular learning outcomes, service experiences/satisfaction, attrition/retention data, external reviews, etc.) in order to develop recommendation reports and/or implement new strategies/approaches to enhance student success. Provide collaborative leadership with other college stakeholders and explores new partnerships and agreements with organizations and industry leaders to enhance access to meaningful co-curricular and developmental experiences for students across the widest range of GBC programs. Develops the human resource capacity necessary to deliver services through the selection and development of staff and design of organizational structures. Responsible for operational assessment and mitigation of risk mitigation practices. Serves as lead for Business Continuity Planning for portfolio in order to establish and lead the recovery plan for the area following a crisis. Partners with the Deans, Associate Vice-President, and other senior staff members at the College to ensure that appropriate portfolio services are delivered to and utilized by students. Advocates for policies and procedures that support engagement and success and plays key role to ensure compliance with such policies and procedures and legislation. Other related duties as assigned. What qualifications do you need for this role? Master’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in in Sociology, Psychology, Higher Education and Policy, Student Development, Business Administration; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Certifications in Human Resources, Career Counselling or other related are assets to this role. Minimum ten years’ experience in a progressive leadership role relevant leadership experience, including demonstrated success in a student success environment, preferably with direct experience in student affairs (or an equivalent combination of education and experience) is required. Experience developing strategic business and operational plans at the divisional and corporate/institutional levels in relative to student development, engagement, retention, success, satisfaction, and well-being. Strong working knowledge of most key aspects of post-secondary delivery, including both service and academic delivery. Excellent communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills with diverse audiences, ranging from students, families, and professional networks to staff, administration, and faculty. Broad leadership skills including a visionary, detail-oriented, and highly collaborative work style, and the ability to strategically facilitate change and incorporate innovative practices into the organization. Has strong professional networks and is involved with organizations/associations to keep pace with trends and best practices. Mediation/conflict resolution skills; cross-cultural communications; nuanced adjudication, negotiation, communication, mediation, and facilitation skills required. Experience and/or training in outcome-based program/service planning and evaluation; significant involvement to research techniques and analysis to inform decision making. Project management, change leadership, and business processes analysis skills; deep knowledge of student learning and development/success theories and practices. Strong review and networking skills to solicit information and generate ideas, quickly and easily; comprehensive knowledge of policies and procedures relating to the College. Project/operational management, organizational development, time management skills; Demonstrated leadership skills. Comprehensive knowledge of policies and procedures relating to the College. Experience in business process re-engineering and implementing and/or improving systems to support business requirements. Expert in developing multi-year strategic plans and yearly business plans, customer service, project management and coaching and mentoring. Experience analyzing data and statistical information in order to forecast and project future costs. Advanced oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, to understand and articulate business requirements and work effectively with staff at all levels across the organization as well as vendors and external stakeholders. Demonstrated leadership in delivering excellent service to others as this is key in supporting the success of our students and our College. Strong collaboration and teamwork skills. Effective ability to interact with others and deal with situations in ways that respect diverse backgrounds, experience and styles. Flexibility in adapting to change and in participating in consultative decision-making processes.
