The Oregon Department of Forestry's (ODF) Mission is – To serve the people of Oregon by protecting, managing, and promoting stewardship of Oregon's forests to enhance environmental, economic, and community sustainability. As ODF’s only interpretive center, the Tillamook Forest Center (TFC), exists to connect people with Oregon State Forests. The TFC is open Wednesday-Sunday. For more information about the TFC, please We have one permanent, full-time position available with the Oregon Department of Forestry, State Forest Division, administered through the Northwest Oregon Area (NWOA). The duty station of this position is in the heart of the Tillamook State Forest, located approximately 22 miles east of Tillamook, Oregon. The scope of responsibilities is centered at the TFC, with participation in area and statewide meetings and projects. As the Director of the Tillamook Forest Center, you will supervise TFC operations (including Visitor Services, Interpretation and Education Program, Facility departments), leading, and collaborating with the TFC team to ensure high quality interpretation and environmental education experiences for visitors. You will also work in close collaboration with the Recreation, Education, and Interpretation (REI) manager, Recreation Leaders, and the Executive Director of the Tillamook Forest Heritage Trust as well as State Forest leaders for the implementation of Recreation, Education, and Interpretation programs and initiatives. For a complete list of duties and working conditions for this opportunity, please Because the Department's highest priority work is a forest fire emergency, this position may be utilized during those emergencies to provide assistance in a variety of ways. That assistance may be directly aiding the emergency effort in the field or at the Salem headquarters. It also may be in providing backup to fill in for another position that is being used in direct aid to the emergency, or it may be in performing an essential function in some capacity either within this Program or elsewhere in Salem or in the field. WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR: Experience overseeing daily operations of a visitor/interpretive/nature center. Ability to motivate and lead staff members to perform high quality work in an efficient and effective manner. Demonstrated effective managerial, supervisory, and leadership qualities and is able to perform under stressful conditions. Exercises good judgement and is therefore able to make sound decisions based on objective input processes. Ability to develop strong working relationships and alignment with TFC, REI, and ODF goals. Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing a program vision, action plans and strategies to achieve higher level goals. Experience working directly with non-profit organizations Experience creating and implementing personal/non-personal interpretation. Experience with best practices in non-formal education curriculum design and instruction. Experience in developing and maintaining successful volunteer programs. Effective communicator, in writing and verbally. Demonstrates excellent interpersonal/customer service skills when interacting with diverse people across multiple disciplines and agencies as well as the public. Holds a degree in fields such as natural resources, environmental education, or interpretation. Active in relevant professional interpretation and/or environmental education related associations and demonstrated commitment to professional improvement and learning. Supervision and Management Experience - Six years of experience in supervision, staff-technical, or professional-level work related to Interpretation, Non-formal Environmental Education, Visitor Services, Facility Maintenance, Forestry or Natural Resources, etc. Two years of this experience must have included staff supervision and management of a program, section, or unit which included : a) development of program rules and policies, b) development of long- and short-range goals and plans, c) program evaluation, AND d) budget preparation. OR Program/Project Leader Experience - Six years of experience in supervision, staff-technical, or professional-level work related to Interpretation, Non-formal Environmental Education, Visitor Services, Facility Maintenance, Forestry or Natural Resources, etc. Two years of this experience must have included program/project leader responsibility involving one or more of the following areas: a) development of program rules and policies, b) development of long- and short-range goals and plans, c) program evaluation and/or project evaluation, OR d) monitoring and controlling or preparing a budget. (NOTE: A Bachelor's degree or equivalent course work (144 quarter or 96 semester hours) in a field related to management, such as Business or Public Administration, or a field related to the program of the employing agency, may be substituted for three years of the required experience , but will not substitute for the two years of specialized experience.) *****In the Work History section on your application , you must clearly describe your experience in the a), b), c), d) areas listed above.
