Job Purpose Reporting to the Global Editor-in-Chief, you will be responsible for leading PC Gamer’s dedicated hardware team, managing a unit of four full-time editors and additional freelancers as well as writing and commissioning articles that provide vital buying advice and component analysis for our audience. You will be expected to stay abreast of industry trends in order to steer our ecommerce, buying guide, news, and feature content. At the centre of this role’s responsibilities are PC Gamer’s dozens of buying guides, our collected, always-updating buying advice about gaming hardware, peripherals and components. Maintaining this category of coverage means assuring that our advice is always relevant and useful, authoritative, and reaching the top of Google search results. This content is a significant revenue driver for PC Gamer, which means you will be expected to fully embrace the commercial elements of the job and create editorial strategies that ensure pcgamer.com continues to become an evermore commercially successful website. You will be responsible for ensuring that the hardware team hits all its deadlines and maintains the high quality of work which PC Gamer is renowned for. You will respond to reasonable requests from the Global Editor-in-Chief to help create any of the department’s output, including its websites, magazines, video, and social media. Examples of content you will be responsible for: in-depth component buyer’s guides, reviews of new products, informative features about hardware trends, event coverage from shows such as CES and Computex. Though the team’s work primarily appears on pcgamer.com, you will also be expected to oversee monthly contributions PC Gamer magazine as required. Additionally, you will be required to manage the production of any hardware-focused video content, attend planning meetings, and liaise with relevant clients and suppliers. As the leader of the Hardware team, you will also be responsible for managing a budget, onboarding, training freelancers, plus developing new and strengthening existing relationships with hardware vendors. We expect you to be the creative lead on all matters hardware, bringing a steady stream of fresh editorial ideas to brainstorming sessions. The job requires excellent attention to detail, a commitment to quality, a metrics-driven mindset, strong understanding of SEO, strong organisational skills, a calm approach and self-discipline. Please note, this role can also be based remotely. Key Role Responsibilities Own and execute a strategy for hardware coverage that delights readers and elevates PC Gamer’s reputation within the industry Meet annual targets for ecommerce revenue that are centred in PC Gamer’s buying guides and deals coverage Plan and lead coverage of hardware events and key ecommerce periods such as Black Friday, Computex, and Amazon Prime Day Deliver quality, relevant and well-written copy to deadlines as directed by the Global Editor-in-Chief and/or other senior editorial staff In conjunction with the Global Editor-in-Chief, take responsibility for managing your own workload in order to meet all your deadlines Liaise with Future’s central ecommerce team to ensure pcgamer.com’s content is operating optimally and the site is on course to deliver traffic and revenue targets Generate appropriate ideas for features, reviews and new areas of coverage Develop and maintain productive industry, PR and commercial relationships Be responsible for and deliver any administrative tasks set by senior staff Contribute social media content to ensure all hardware content is correctly promoted Attend events when required Supervisory Responsibilities Directly supervises the PC Gamer hardware US editorial team, comprised of four full-time editors. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organisation’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, creating and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. What do I need to succeed? Experience of writing and editing clean, informative, entertaining copy for the web Excellent knowledge of of the PC gaming hardware sector, including contacts at major relevant OEMs (Nvidia, AMD, Intel, Corsair, Razer etc.) Deep understanding of SEO as it pertains to editorial coverage Ability to explain complex subjects in a clear and easily understood fashion Strong written and oral communication skills Work on own initiative Ability to deliver copy to tight deadlines Excellent time management skills Team player Desirable Skills and Experience Journalism background Project management Budget management Knowledge of libel law Expert knowledge of the hardware market space – vendors, etailers, price points, on a global level, etc. What will I get in return?
