Job Title: Chief Program Officer (CPRO) Who We Are: Evidence Action aims to be a world leader in scaling evidence-based and cost-effective programs to reduce the burden of poverty for hundreds of millions of people in the poorest places. Last year Deworm the World reached over 270 million children by partnering with governments to launch, scale, and sustain mass school-based deworming programs. Meanwhile Dispensers for Safe Water provided 4 million people across rural Africa with clean water, saving thousands of young lives. The approach relies on an innovative and human-centric design to deliver clean water at the source. Our Beta incubator rigorously prototypes and tests our next generation of programs, seeking bold and scalable solutions across sectors - including education, health, and income generation. Evidence Action has a presence across 10 countries, with major offices in Nairobi, Kenya; Delhi, India; and Washington, D.C. Our programs have been recognized by GiveWell, the Skoll Foundation, The Life You Can Save, Giving What We Can, and covered in the Economist, NPR, and the New York Times. Position Overview: Are you impassioned about improving the lives of hundreds of millions of people, making a measurable and clear difference in their opportunities? Are you comfortable using data and evidence to drive sharp and informed decision-making, to design, implement, and monitor programs with exceptional results and value for money? Evidence Action is seeking a Chief Program Officer who will enable our flagship programs to thrive. As a member of the global leadership team, this individual will play an important role in setting organization direction for the future. S/he will lead our largest programs - Deworm the World and Dispensers for Safe Water - as well as our 40+ person, Nairobi-based Monitoring, Learning & Information Systems (MLIS) team. The MLIS team measures what matters, and provides dynamic performance feedback to our programs to drive continuous improvements. This is a newly created role, and we are seeking a dynamic leader who can build and execute thoughtful and ambitious strategies while ensuring operational excellence. S/he will have exceptional interpersonal and people management skills, with the ability to build high-performing, cohesive teams. S/he will have the ability to navigate fluidly across diverse stakeholders – program teams, in-country staff, governments, donors, and partners to accomplish an ambitious agenda. And s/he will be comfortable establishing nimble and ‘right-sized’ systems and processes within the context of a rapidly growing and evolving organization. Location: The Chief Program Officer will either be based in Evidence Action’s US office in Washington, DC or Nairobi, Kenya What You’ll Do: Leadership, Management, and Organizational Strategy In partnership with the Chief Executive Officer and global leadership team, play a key role in the overall development, strategy, service delivery, and management of the organization Manage, mentor, and recruit (as required) flagship program and MLIS leadership and teams, with a bias toward empowerment, accountability and effectiveness to optimize the impact of the organization Identify and manage major organizational and programmatic risks; provide relevant and timely information to the CEO to enable effective decision-making Model Evidence Action’s culture and values, fostering an a environment of team-work, accountability, creativity and innovation Ensure that evidence-based and data driven decision-making are adopted into regular practices and strategic choices Overall Program Oversight and Evaluation Ensure exceptional delivery and performance of Evidence Action’s flagship programs, promoting collaborative relationships across a matrixed structure. Ensure that the expectations of funders, partners, and other stakeholders are consistently met or exceeded. Build the MLIS team into a global function, broadening its reach and ensuring consistency across our global offices Maintain ultimate responsibility for planning and delivery against the programs’ strategies, annual plans, and budgets Effectively use data for decision-making, leveraging data to continuously improve upon and inform key program and operational decisions Communications and Fundraising Engage and communicate the organization’s mission and vision internally and externally, including with current and future partners and networks. Drive revenue growth from a diverse constituency to include restricted and unrestricted funds from foundations, governments and corporations, and highly committed individual donors for annual and major gifts, working in collaboration with the External Relations department Who We’re Looking For: Evidence Action seeks a dynamic executive to build upon and enhance its impressive early record. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to the organization’s mission and thrive in an entrepreneurial environment. Qualifications: 12+ years of experience, including substantive experience within the private sector Visionary and strategic leader, capable of developing and successfully executing a strategy for Evidence Action’s at-scale programming - including identifying the structure and resourcing to deliver these programs at exceptional quality Strong relationship builder with the ability to find common ground, build consensus, and strengthen collaboration among diverse stakeholders Talented people manager, with a proven track record of successfully enabling high performance from a diverse array of direct reports including highly technical staff. This should include the ability to synthesize and process technical information to serve as a thought partner to technical leads Experience leading at-scale programs in international development, preferably in relevant sectors (health, WASH) and in partnership with governments Strong problem-solving and analytical skills. S/he will be comfortable with data for decision-making - using imperfect data to make well-informed, thoughtful decisions Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills. S/he will be highly effective in building relationships with donors and partners, and in engaging collaboratively and effectively across a matrixed structure Superb fundraising and communication skills – including strong communications both written and oral, with interest and aptitude for effectively engaging major funders Strong alignment with core Evidence Action values, and ability to lead and thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly growing organization A Master’s degree in Business Administration, Economics, Public Administration, Public Policy or related advanced degree Preferred: Strong relationships with prospective funders, proven track record for fundraising Experience in a high-growth, matrixed international organization Experience engaging with government counterparts on at-scale programs
