The Block Research Group (BRG) at the Institute of Technology in Architecture, ETH Zurich, led by Prof. Dr. Philippe Block and Dr. Tom Van Mele, has three core areas of research: equilibrium analysis and design of vaulted masonry structures, computational form finding and structural optimisation of curved surface structures, and fabrication and construction innovation for novel shell structures. Translating research into practice, the BRG develops novel computational structural design strategies to utilise digital fabrication and to push construction innovation. To address the grand challenges posed by climate change, the group’s research follows the motto “strength through geometry” to reduce embodied carbon, use fewer resources and minimise waste. Project background The BRG believes in “open research”, and the BRG website has always been an important instrument for the dissemination of our work. The BRG’s online presence is now due for an upgrade. https://block.arch.ethz.ch https://block.arch.ethz.ch/eq https://compas-dev.github.io Job description To achieve this, your tasks for this fixed-term contract will include: Re-developing the backends of BRG and eQUILIBRIUM (eQ) websites (migrate from PHP to Python). Developing a backend for COMPAS website. Developing a new visual style for BRG, eQ and COMPAS. Re-developing eQ drawing apps. Re-developing and extending admin interfaces for BRG, eQUILIBIRIUM and COMPAS. Your profile We are looking for a full-stack web-developer to build a scalable, testable, maintainable architecture for BRG’s main website which will serve as a central hub for the dissemination of the group’s research and teaching innovations. The role requires strong experience in Python back-end frameworks such as Flask/Django and database toolkits like SQLAlchemy, together with efficiency in mobile-responsive front-end frameworks like Bootstrap/React/Vue etc. Additional knowledge of computational geometry related developments with WebGL and WebAssembly and a good sense of UI/UX and graphical design are highly preferred.
