Concordia University invites applicants to apply for the full- time position of Pharmaceutical Research Sciencist. This position is responsible for managing a research laboratory and for overseeing a range of biochemistry-focused research projects. This includes mentoring students on research projects, designing and performing experiments, assisting with writing manuscripts, and managing lab functions such as maintaining equipment and ordering supplies as needed. This position reports to and requires weekly interaction and meetings with the Director of Technology Transfer, who also holds a position in the Dept. of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Concordia University Wisconsin. Current research projects are focused on drug discovery and development, and specifically: (a) Protein- and cell-based binding studies of estrogen agonists, directed toward developing drugs to treat dementia, (b) Biophysical characterization of fluorescent dithio probes to image oxidative stress, and (c) Enzymatic assay and screening of inhibitors of dual-specificity phosphatase-5 (DUSP-5), to affect angiogenesis. Responsibilities Coordinate research activities of undergraduate and master's students working in a biochemistry and biophysics laboratory. Manage the lab, maintaining equipment and supplies. This includes assisting with filling liquid nitrogen and helium on a 500 MHz NMR spectrometer. Keep lab records. Perform cell-based transcriptional activation assays, enzymatic assays, and fluorescence (TR-FRET and FP) assays to characterize binding affinity of lead molecules to target proteins. Assist in summarizing data for publishing manuscripts and posters. Attend and present at regular lab meetings at Concordia, and at partner institutions, as needed. Wlllingness to work with student and faculty-led spinout companies doing drug and diagnostic development work. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Strong critical and analytical thinking skills, and a passion for science. Professional communication skills, both written and interpersonal Ability to work independently, multi-task, and prioritize responsibilities Ability to work as a member of a collaborative team Knowledge and skill in the use of computers and Microsoft Office, including Excel, Power Point, Outlook, and Graphing software like Graphpad Knowledge and skill in the area of protein expression in coli, and purification. Knowledge and skill in various enzyme kinetic and biophysical binding assays, especially using fluorescence techniques like TR-FRET and fluorescence polarization. Ideal candidates will also have some familiarity with: HPLC, NMR, and/or in silico protein docking. Knowledge of and commitment to the Christian faith and Concordia University mission Education and Experience A science undergraduate degree is required, an MS degree is preferred. Highly qualified applicants will also have prior experience in performing and publishing peer-reviewed research. Some of the above-mentioned skills can be learned on the job, for exceptional candidates. Compensation and Benefits This is a full-time position. Starting range is dependent upon individual qualifications and experience.
