Position Overview: Reporting to the Communications Manager, the Communications Coordinator is a strategic partner who works with and supports other management and staff to achieve communications objectives. As a collaborative and creative self-starter you will play a key role in growing the City’s social media presence across multiple platforms and develop innovative and creative media content across all media platforms to effectively engage our target audience and increase our communication reach. In this position you will be responsible for providing communications expertise and guidance, and identifying opportunities to advance the organization objectives, including enhanced engagement with key stakeholders through targeted communications. As the Coordinator you will be responsible for providing department leadership in the Manager’s absence. Principle Duties & Responsibilities: Develop and implement communications plans on behalf of the City, Senior Administration and departments to inform clients, employees and the general public of initiatives and policies of the City. Carry out communications plans on behalf of the organization including writing and issuing media releases and print material, preparing key messages, booking and overseeing advertising, updating website content, writing social media platforms, preparing for public meetings etc. Monitor and respond on the City’s behalf to activity on the City’s social media accounts; and moderate and enforce applicable policies Manage external print projects on behalf of the organization including liaising with contract graphic designers and preparing materials for print with print shops. Provide and/or coordinate media training to authorized employees. Handle media inquiries and assist spokespeople in preparing key messages for responses. Act as the spokesperson for the organization where applicable. Required Qualifications:Education, Training & Experience: University degree related to communications/journalism/marketing or a related discipline. 3 years experience in a progressively responsible communications role. Demonstrated experience with graphic design would be considered an asset. Key Knowledge, Technical Skills and Abilities: Knowledge and understanding of political issues at a local, provincial and federal level. Ability to effectively use a variety of computer programs, including word processing, graphic design, spreadsheet and presentation software. Knowledge of marketing concepts and strategies Demonstrated communication skills with competence in writing
