The Energy Supply Hedging team, within the Centrica Interfaces directorate, is an integral part of Centrica’s Energy Marketing and Trading (EM&T) division. The Energy Supply Hedging (ESH) team buys gas, power and renewables products for supply to British Gas Residential and British Gas Business’ customers, worth around £4bn per annum. It also manages the output from Centrica’s share of the UK nuclear generation fleet. The team is responsible for recommending appropriate hedging strategies to these group businesses, mitigating commodity risks and supporting commercial performance, and then executing these strategies via the trading teams within the Energy Marketing and Trading division. The Hedging Analyst aides the execution of hedging transactions on behalf of the downstream businesses, incorporating market trends and fundamentals within the agreed hedging strategies and risk limits. They are responsible for position management, market analysis and delivering efficient commodity costs, of which, performance is assessed against value added KPIs. Part of the role also includes developmental/project work in which the person will need to work independently. The role holder will also be required to provide information to senior stakeholders in the supply businesses, ensuring that both divisions of British Gas are aware of relevant market movements and developing commodity risks for their position/strategies. They will be responsible for communicating the effects of the teams’ actions and commodity market developments in a clear and relevant manner. The job holder will liaise with a range of teams and departments including Trading, Risk, Business Finance, Origination, Quantitative Analytics & IS within EM&T and Risk, Demand Forecasting, Pricing & Propositions within the supply businesses. This is a London based role and our offices are situated near to Marble Arch. Role responsibilities will include: Commodity Pricing, Strategy Execution and Commercial Insight Ownership of hedging execution, pricing, position, risk and KPIs across all portfolios Thorough understanding of pricing models and methodologies including periodic reviews ensuring alignment with commodity market Provide continuous position reporting and with a clear communication of approach / tactics for pro-active position management adhering to agreed strategies and risk parameters Ability to develop KPI’s to track performance of tactical changes to pre-agreed hedging strategies Proactively identify short term changes to the commodity environment and develop & propose target tactical adjustment to the hedging approaches, continuously improving performance Efficient execution of orders with trading teams, ensuring compliance with all EM&T and Centrica policies Analyse and clearly communicate the multiple risks facing the business (price, volume, shaping, regulatory etc), and work with members of the team to propose risk mitigating strategies Continuously monitor the regulatory changes impacting the area of responsibility and work with the regulatory teams across the group to mitigate risks. Driving Continuous Improvement Continuous improvement of reports highlighting headline risks faced by the different business divisions and across different portfolios Constant development of automation to optimise time Periodic reviews of systems, processes and process documentation to ensure maximum performance and minimal operational risk Ensuring the customers, both internal and external, are always at the heart of any changes / improvements. The Person: Understanding and good experience of UK gas and power markets, ideally through hedging, trading, commodity fundamentals, risk management or demand forecasting Ability to fundamentally and technically analyse markets. Proficient with technical analysis methodologies with an ability to communicate analysis back Good knowledge of global commodity and financial markets such as, but not limited to, Oil, LNG, European Gas & Power, FX and their impacts on UK gas and power prices. Awareness of the inter-connectedness of global commodity markets Understanding of location spreads, commodity spreads, fuel switching, impact of storage positions as drivers of price Good understanding of the different risks in variable and fixed price energy supply portfolios with an ability to communicate these clearly through analysis, reports or on-demand in meetings Good understanding of Economics / Supply & Demand Previous experience of dealing with customers - Going the extra mile in helping and support colleagues and customers Strong communication skills – ability to explain complex analysis concisely. Previous experience of presenting to senior stakeholders Ability to develop risk management tools & metrics with an ability to translate market developments into impacts on various performance KPIs Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain complex models & data management systems Self-Starter & quick learner Proficiency in MS Excel & VBA, Power-BI or other BI Tools, Database / SQL.
