The Calgary Zoo is looking for Outreach Education Interpreters/Summer Camp Leaders for the 2020 season. Our Mission | Take and inspire action to sustain wildlife and wild places Our Values | Effective collaboration and communication, honesty and integrity, customer focus, safety, and conservation This is a joint role which involves leading school programs from March until June and then leading summer camp from June to August. Contract Term: March 30, 2020 to August 21, 2020 What You Will Do: Outreach Education Interpreter - March to June (Approx. 30 hours/week) Deliver high quality, formal and informal programs at all age levels in an entertaining and engaging manner Ensure excellent, positive classroom management and group engagement for a variety of client types Research and write programs and activities as assigned Evaluate peers and programs and provide constructive feedback Maintain and upgrade resource materials Demonstrate initiative to improve programs and procedures, actively participate in department planning Incorporate conservation education messaging and activities into programming Work with multiple program coordinators on a range of program types Provide exceptional customer service to a variety of internal and external clients Provide program specific training to zoo volunteers and seasonal education staff Maintain a safe,clean working environment for animals, visitors, and zoo staff Perform all duties in a professional manner according to zoo policies and guidelines Complete all other duties as required, including interpretive programming with other Education Department activities Other related duties as assigned Summer Camp Leader - June to August (approx. 42 hours/week) Research, plan, and implement a week-long camp program including stories, crafts, games, and activities to be run weekly for 8 weeks during the spring or summer months Evaluate the program layout and content based on program performance and make adjustments where necessary Provide leadership and guidance in a variety of activities for camp participants Ensure the safety and appropriate supervision of all camp participants at all times Maintain consistent leadership and behaviour management of campers Establish and maintain strong rapport with camper's parents, provide individualized feedback when necessary Present engaging education programs and tours ensuring accuracy of information and the maintenance of the conservation message based on the Calgary Zoo's mandate Adhere to the Calgary Zoo's policies and procedures Maintain a safe, clean working environment for campers, animals, visitors, and staff Other related duties as required What You Will Bring: Bachelor's Degree in Natural or Biological Sciences, Education, or a related discipline 2 to 4 years experience in education First Aid Certification Excellent oral and written communication skills Ability to present scientific information to audiences of all ages and education levels in an engaging manner Willingness to work collaboratively and the ability to maintain a positive attitude in a dynamic work environment are essential Knowledge related to the Calgary Zoo and its collection is an asset Ability to meet project goals and deadlines Demonstrated excellence in classroom management and student engagement Familiarity with the Alberta Curriculum of Studies is an asset Experience developing conservation education programs is an asset Demonstrated excellence with interpretive techniques such as: art, audio/visual, demonstrations, drama, graphics, guided tours, music, prop talks, puppetry, role-playing, storytelling Basic competency in Microsoft Suite software Additional Requirements: All candidates must be eligible to work in Canada Successful candidates must provide a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Persons search prior to their first day of work. Working Conditions: This position requires considerable on-grounds mobility where there are long periods of time spend on foot indoors and outdoors in all weather Some lifting may be required Pulling a wagon of educational resources on grounds to classrooms Limited flexibility for multiple days off due to the condensed nature of the program The Calgary Zoo is an outdoor facility and all staff working at the zoo must be comfortable working in a large variety of outdoor conditions.
