Bullis School seeks an innovative, energetic, and dedicated candidate for the role of Assistant Head of Upper School Academics. The Assistant Head of Upper School Academics serves as a member of the School’s leadership team. The position is responsible for managing the Upper School’s academic programs and student advising. This position works with Upper School administrators to steer curricular work, including developing curriculum and measuring student outcomes. The position also works with other K-12 administrators on various school-wide curriculum initiatives. The Assistant Head of Upper School Academics supervises the School Registrar and is responsible for leading and supporting Upper School Department Chairs. This position identifies various professional development opportunities for Upper School faculty. This is a 12-month administrative position and reports directly to the Head of Upper School. In addition to completing the application, we are requesting applicants to provide an educational philosophy statement. The essential functions of the position include the following, as well as other duties as necessary and assigned: Essential Functions Academic Program and Advising Oversees the division’s academic policies, including proposing updates and recommendations, communicating academic program/ policies, and addressing student and parent inquiries Advises students on academic program requirements that align with their needs and interests Participates in student concerns meetings and supports the execution of support plans in connection with Learning Support Coordinates the Upper School Independent Study Program Collaborates creating the school’s master schedule, including overseeing the Upper School course selection process and resolving student/faculty scheduling conflicts Oversees the development of the Upper School exam schedule Participates in creating the Upper School curriculum guide as a curricular web presence Organizes all elements of the Upper School Student Recognition Day Assembly Curriculum Works with Upper School leadership to set the direction of curricular work, guided by current curricular trends and research Coordinates the regular review of the Upper School’s academic program Collaborates with Upper School leadership to develop new courses that align with the vision of the division’s academic program Supports the integration of the school’s Signature Programs by identifying various avenues for student engagement Collaborates with the Head of Upper School to design activities for instructional staff meetings Supervision of Registrar and Department Chair/ Faculty Support Manages the Registrar, including developing and evaluating short- and long-term goals, including professional development goals Provides ongoing feedback, coaching, and support to the Registrar Leads, advises, and provides ongoing feedback, coaching, and support to the Upper School Department Chairs, including establishing clear roles and expectations and the development of short and long-term goals Provides ongoing support to faculty by promoting high standards in the implementation and delivery of curriculum Coordinates classroom observations and recommends and develops professional growth opportunities for faculty Serves as a team leader for faculty and/or department chair evaluations Pedagogy and Teaching Mastery Partners with Learning Support and faculty to implement effective and differentiated instructional practices that support diverse learning and school, divisional, and student curricular and instructional needs Provides faculty with resources to empower them as curricular and instructional leaders Builds professional and trustworthy relationships with faculty to ensure meaningful feedback about teaching and learning Serves as a faculty resource on pedagogy, subject area knowledge, technological applications, and mission effectiveness Stays abreast of technology initiatives and integration in the classroom K-12 Responsibilities Collaborates with school leaders to: develop a vision for Bullis curriculum create an implementation plan based on school-wide force recommendations ensure compliance with the standards set forth by accrediting agencies make curricular revisions, both horizontally and vertically, to ensure sustainable and focused improvement that align with short- and long-term school/division goals Serves as a member on various K-12 committees to implement recommendations Teaching Teaches one course per year in the area of the individual’s expertise Other Duties Participates in the recruitment and hiring of faculty Other duties as assigned by the Head of Upper School Qualified candidates should possess the following education & experience: Bachelor’s Degree (required) Master’s Degree (preferred) Minimum of five years teaching experience, focused on students in grades 9-12 (required) Minimum three years’ administrative experience in grades 9-12 (preferred) Demonstrates skill in supervising faculty and staff members Demonstrates skill in helping individual students succeed academically and socially Enthusiasm for and experience in working with a diverse community Exchange accurate information in situations with parent, students and other health professionals Ability to make good judgments and quick decision High degree of discretion and confidentiality, as necessary and appropriate Bullis School is committed to staff diversity, equality, and continued professional growth.
