Job Title: Director of Community & Government Affairs Employment Status: Exempt Department: External Affairs Reports To: Senior Vice President of External Affairs Summary The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation is seeking a Director of Community and Government Affairs. This role has several components, which include: 1) working directly to build and sustain meaningful relationships with community partners and stakeholders 2 managing policy and legislative issues that impact the Yard, 3 working closely with elected officials regarding projects and programs at the Navy Yard, and 4 supporting internal Yard initiatives that support diversity and inclusion across all Yard efforts. Areas of Responsibility Community Affairs As a representative for BNYDC, the Director of Government & Community Affairs will drive efforts to enhance the Navy Yard’s community presence and reputation as a resource to the surrounding community. The Director will also: Develop and execute an outreach plan to increase BNYDC’s presence in the community to drive engagement. This includes working in partnership with other members of the External Affairs team to develop ongoing programs for the local community that are relevant and synergistic with the community needs. Establish and maintain partnerships with community-based organizations and other stakeholder groups, including but not limited to; Community Boards, New York City Housing Authority, and Business Improvement Districts to further organizational mission and departmental goals. Cultivating and managing relationships with advocates and community-based organizations on behalf of BNYDC, including identifying opportunities and obstacles as well as recommending engagement strategies; Research and attend community-based programs and events; support outreach activities including job fairs, local block association meetings, tenant groups, etc. Liaise with other CBOs to exchange and update information on resources and services available. Government Affairs Develop and execute on a strategic outreach plan to work with elected representatives, governmental officials, and agencies at the City, State and Federal levels to preserve and expand public support. Maintain strong relationships with elected officials including responding to information requests and the management of events, meetings and presentations Develop and execute strategy for annual legislative budget request process. Track and monitor proposed legislation and provide legislative and policy analysis where appropriate. Manage testimony and hearing process including preparing testimony, managing the preparation of briefing materials Serve as the liaison between community/elected officials and staff; make suggestions on program improvements. Other Projects Proactively advise and communicate externally regarding the Yard’s MWBE contracting, and employment opportunities offered by the Yard’s onsite employment center. Translate and present relevant data to funders, potential tenants, community partners, elected officials, and other key stakeholders (such data may include Employment Center placement trends, tenant occupancy breakdown, funding streams, and Yard visitor ship numbers, etc.) Required Skills and Abilities Genuine interest in the mission of BNYDC and non-profit work Real estate and/or land use experience a plus Demonstrated knowledge of Brooklyn community-based organizations and political landscape Demonstrated knowledge of and comfort with legislative and agency processes Strong project management skillset Experience coordinating and assisting with special events Strong oral and written communication skills, including strong public speaking skills and proven ability to present the agency’s position in meetings with high level officials and other governmental and private entities Collaborative and team-oriented Excellent organizational, time-management, and multi-tasking skills, including the ability to take initiative, problem solve, balance competing priorities, work independently and with teams in a fast-paced environment, pay close attention to detail, meet deadlines, work well under pressure, and provide internal updates and briefings; Strong computer, internet, research, and database skills Must be available to attend evening/weekend meetings and events Qualifications Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) preferred At least five (5) years of experience in relevant areas Must be available to attend evening/weekend meetings and events BNYDC is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
