Summary Job Description Program Objective/Scope The BD Research & Development Summer Internship Program provides the student with an opportunity to partner with peers, senior personnel, and supervisors who provide informal mentoring and coaching. Students will have the opportunity to be exposed to our process of designing and developing technologies and products related to medical and/or interventional devices, in vitro diagnostics, and life science research for different global markets. Selected students may work with cross-functional or interdisciplinary teams and may have multiple internal partners and customers. Each intern will have an individual project and the opportunity to develop technical engineering and scientific expertise. Through our summer internship, intern students develop an extensive professional network, learn how to work in a scientific and engineering environment, build hands-on laboratory skills, and deliver presentations showcasing their work. The summer internship program is a great opportunity to gain exposure to a fortune 500 biotechnology and medical device company and specifically, BD’s culture. We are recruiting for a highly driven engineering/science students with a passion for technology and product development. The candidate is responsible for all relocation, housing, and transportation costs. Project Areas: As an engineering/scientific intern within BD R&D, you will have the opportunity to work in one of the following teams: Medical (Parenteral Sciences Center of Excellence) Applicable Majors: BME, ME, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biology, Chemistry The PSci COE is looking for technically oriented individuals to facilitate medical device R&D and Product Development. Project examples include drug delivery device prototyping, testing and qualification (both bench and preclinical in vivo), development, and filling pharmaceutical placebo formulations for drug delivery device evaluation, analytical chemistry, and biomedical and/or engineering assay development. Medical Chemistry (Interventional and Preclinical Development and Toxicology Center of Excellence) Applicable Majors: CHEM/CHEM-Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, BME, Materials Science, Analytical Chemistry Project Examples: Work with multidisciplinary R&D team on medical device technology and product development, including drug-device combination products, diagnostics, sealants and surgical accessories. Includes assessment of the viability of new technologies for these products. Experimental evaluations may include mixing and separations of components, physical and chemical characterization of drugs and materials, as well as elution/dissolution testing. Intern will be trained/supervised to employ a range of analytical chemistry tools and bench scale processes used in laboratory work. Chemical analytical tools include chromatography and spectroscopy methods (e.g. HPLC/UPLC, UV-VIS, DSC, Raman spectroscopy). Work will be carried out under the direction of senior scientists and engineers and may also include liquid and powder flow/mixing studies, as well as material and product testing according to ASTM/ISO standards. Device Engineering (Interventional and Life Sciences) Applicable Majors: Mechanical Engineering, CHEM/CHEM-Engineering, BME, Materials Science Project Examples: Projects may include functional prototype design (device and/or instrumentation), assembly and testing, potential software development for custom instrumentation, material evaluation for optimization in product development, effects of materials selection on device and reagent performance, and materials analysis for manufacturability and process integration. Candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team focused on novel diagnostic device development. Candidate would be responsible for tasks including execution of mechanical designs, conducting technical experiments, and reporting on results to impact product development. Preferred candidates will have some previous experience with Solidworks, LabVIEW, C++, prototype development, and data acquisition and processing software (e.g. MATLAB, ImageJ). Instrumentation and Automation (Life Sciences) Applicable Majors: BME, Mechanical Engineering, physics, physical chemistry Project Examples: Projects may include translating complex sample processing steps from manual to automated solutions. Early instrumentation sub-system design and functionality testing will be conducted in a multi-disciplinary team setting with focus on developing end-to-end solutions for unmet needs in clinical diagnostics. Other examples include early-stage instrument prototyping for processing complex biological specimens. The candidate will focus on maintaining the properties of biological samples under various fluidic conditions, while developing functional prototype designs for clinical testing. Candidate would be responsible for tasks including execution of mechanical designs, conducting technical experiments, and reporting on results to impact product development. Preferred candidates will have some previous experience with instrument prototype development and biological assays. Computer Aided Engineering Simulation and CT Scanning Teams Applicable Majors: ME, BME, CHEME, CE, IE (Graduate Level Students Desired for Simulation) Project Examples: Structural evaluation of disposable or durable medical products such as blood collection sets or diagnostic instruments, evaluation of liquid flow through internal channels or external air flow around devices, material and product testing to ASTM/ISO standards, non-destructive imaging using computed tomography and complementary imaging technologies. Advanced Prototyping Teams Applicable Majors: IE, ME, BME, Materials Science Project Examples: Improved post process operations for Additive Manufacturing processes (3D Printing) such as new and safer methods for chemicals post processing (SLA), Thermal Post Cure (Carbon), achieving optimal metals hardness (Direct Metal). Investigation into 3D Printed spare parts for manufacturing and Low Volume Production cost analysis. Exponential Technologies Teams Applicable Majors: CS&E, Graphic Design, Industrial Design Project Examples: Support VR application development. Convert Lidar Scanner, CAD and/or Architectural model files to UNITY compatible file with appropriate texture mapping. Life Sciences Applicable Majors: Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Material Science Project Examples: As a researcher within life sciences, you'll be primarily involved in developing and characterizing novel diagnostic assays aimed at addressing key unmet healthcare needs in sepsis and antimicrobial resistance. The candidate will focus on the successful integration of biological assays with prototype instrumentation in order to optimize clinical performance. The project will include optimization of assay chemistry, design of workflows suitable for automation, along with enhancing assay design for performance in complex clinical samples. The candidate will be part of a multi-disciplinary team comprised of biologists, engineers, and data scientists. Data Science / Bioinformatics (Life Sciences Innovation) Applicable Majors: Data Science, Bioinformatics, Statistics Project examples: Work with data science team in the life sciences innovation group on large scale antimicrobial susceptibility projects. The candidate may focus on database development for bacterial isolates, bioinformatics pipelines, data analysis and visualization of genomic data, and machine learning to predict susceptibility from bacterial DNA sequence. Preferred candidates will have experience in scripting languages such as R or Python and be familiar with basic biology concepts, in particular microbiology.
