What are the current ‘state of the art’ approaches to estimating the potential for future rates of technological progress, and what is an appropriate rate to set for a Dutch electricity distribution company or the Portuguese gas transmission company? How to account for company-specific idiosyncrasies that are outside of management control and isolate them from managerial choices? Is it more costly to provide water services in a dense urban area or a sparse rural area? Where can an airport improve its cost and service performance and what is an appropriate action plan for it to achieve those improvements? How to robustly determine the productivity implications of a particular policy choice or a financial transaction? For example: What is the likely impact of Brexit on future productivity and wage growth? What is the impact on the regulator’s ability to make comparisons of costs and service standards between companies of a proposed merger? If you can’t wait to get your teeth into these, and other, interesting questions, then we have the job for you at one of Europe’s leading microeconomic and finance consultancies. We are looking for graduate Analysts to be based in one of our offices to support our performance assessment team with project and business development initiatives. The performance assessment team is highly international, covers all regulated sectors (e.g. water, energy, transport, financial services), and involves assessing efficiency issues in regulation and competition contexts. The team is at the cutting edge of theoretical and applied work and aims to set the standard in the area through thought leadership content. The project work is varied and you will have exposure from day one: one week you could be in the Caribbean assisting a regulator in determining an appropriate cost allowance for the future price control period, the next week debating the balance between evidence and expert judgement with a German energy lawyer, and the week after discussing technical issues with some of the world’s leading academics in the field. This job offers a good work–life balance and diversity of background and thought. You’ll need to bring exceptional technical skills, a strong team ethic and the intellectual curiosity to get to the heart of the issue. What We’re Looking For Candidates should have a first class undergraduate degree and have, or be working towards, a postgraduate degree in Economics or Econometrics with a solid background in microeconomics Excellent academic record Excellent problem solving and analytical skills Advanced knowledge of programming languages (e.g. Stata) Ability to build robust client relationships and manage complex projects Highly motivated and committed team player In addition to excellent spoken and written English, fluency in a second European language is highly desirable, particularly German, Dutch, Italian or French Detailed knowledge of stochastic frontier analysis or data envelopment analysis is desirable Relevant work experience is desirable What We Offer Highly competitive salary and bonus package with comprehensive benefits A collaborative and fun multicultural working environment The opportunity to work with some of the brightest and most experienced minds in the industry A structured career path First-class, hands-on learning with training and development opportunities Flexible working arrangements Visa sponsorship opportunities Application deadline: 31st March 2020.
