Armor is a minority-owned, Florida-based, company, held entirely by Dr. Jose Armas. Armor was created for the sole purpose of providing comprehensive medical, pharmaceutical, mental health, and dental health care services to inmate populations. We were incorporated in July 2004 when one of South Florida’s leading medical provider networks, Medical Care Consortium, Inc. (MCCI) responded to the Sheriff in Broward County who was seeking cost-effective ways to improve service and ways to improve health care. Our founder, Dr. Jose Armas, had already started successful health care businesses and networks spanning primary care, medical specialty networks, home health, and medical equipment. After learning of the issues and challenges confronting the Broward County Sheriff’s Office (BSO), Dr. Armas organized our company based upon proven managed care principles and reflecting his commitment to patient-centered, cost-effective, and quality health care. He reached out to experienced correctional providers and managers who proposed comprehensive facility-based inmate health care, increased onsite services, and professional utilization management of offsite contractors. After nearly 15 years of operations, Armor Correctional Health Services, Inc. now provides health services to over 31,000 inmates for 26 clients across nine states, including 13 Florida county contracts representing over 12,000 inmate lives. Our organization is based on proven managed care principles and reflects our commitment to patient-centered, cost-effective, quality health care. Armor currently employs approximately 1,400 people.. We are not your typical correctional health care company. Our origins are in community service and, as a physician-owned company, our employees have a clear and consistent directive to serve our clients and their communities by serving our patients. Our most successful relationships are with clients and employees who understand that, above all, Armor is about quality patient care. As a matter of policy and as a function of practice, we do not compromise patient care in an effort to save money.
